Since its original release in 2014, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” has become one of the most recognizable names in indie horror gaming. Created by Scott Cawthon, the franchise quickly gained popularity for its suspenseful gameplay and unexpected jump scares. From its release to now, this franchise has gained a mass following and grown into a global sensation with a dedicated fanbase.
Due to this huge success, many more games under this series dropped over the years, expanding its audience and popularity. Many popular gamers, such as The Game Theorist and Markiplier, both say that the games are suspenseful and mystery-heavy.
The series’ popularity eventually led to the release of the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie in 2023, starring big names such as Josh Hutcherson and Elizabeth Lail. The film attracted both longtime fans and new audiences, further expanding the franchise’s reach beyond gaming. Following the success of the first movie, anticipation grew for the continuation of the story in a second film adaptation.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 was released on Dec. 5, 2025. With high anticipation, the movie grossed $63 million, and made $109 million worldwide in the first week after release.
Despite some criticism regarding pacing and storytelling choices, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 deepened the lore that fans have analyzed for years. This movie was created for the dedicated fans of the franchise; despite the low Rotten Tomatoes score of 16%, many say it’s a great film.
“I’ve been in the fandom for years now, and watching the movie made me feel nostalgic. This isn’t really a stand-alone film to be judged but rather a buildup from the games,” said freshman Rachel Manyala.
The franchise is known for its hidden clues, cryptic mini-games, and theories surrounding its characters, so the movie was more catered to the returning fanbase, requiring prior knowledge to fully understand the story. However, critics say that parts of the movie are confusing and not scary enough.
“I feel like the movies strayed away from the actual plot and kind of lost the plot of the game. It feels like the movies went a whole new direction from the games,” said freshman Elise Panaligan.
Despite the mixed reviews, both the first and second movies gave exposure to the indie horror genre to many who might not have been interested at first.
The impact of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 extends beyond its gameplay. It demonstrated that an independently developed horror game could be successful and have a huge fanbase. By combining simple mechanics with strong atmosphere and mystery, the series helped redefine modern indie horror. This sets a high standard for upcoming indie horror games and is used as a stepping stone for developers.
