BTS Gets Ready To Release New Album: “ARIRANG”

With their recognition as one of the most world-renowned groups, BTS is set to make their first group comeback following their military enlistment. The long-awaited album Arirang will be released on Mar. 20 KST, a project that has been described as a deeply personal gift and tribute to fans that reflects on their journey and roots as a Korean group. The members—RM, Jin, Suga, J-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook—express their commitment and expectation towards the new album.

As Jung Kook remarked, “We shared our feelings with each other as we completed the album, including how much we missed you, how much we value you and how excited we are about the future.”

Many fans have waited for this moment for a very long time, showing overwhelming excitement and emotional reactions to BTS’ return after going on hiatus to focus on solo projects and to attend their mandatory enlistment for South Korea’s military service.

“As a fan of six years, I’m so excited for the album,” said junior Kaylee Segovia.

The word “Arirang” represents a Korean cultural heritage, often considered an unofficial national anthem and a symbol of strength. This sets a deeper dive into BTS’ Korean roots, reflecting on their journey from hardship to hope and making a return rather than a comeback. Driven by a clear purpose, BTS’ Arirang is said to be exploring the themes of separation, longing, resilience, and hope, inspired by the folk song of many variations to express universal feelings of sorrow and love that have shaped their music. Since the release of the comeback date, many fans have been making theories and speculating the meaning of the album.

“I think the album is going to showcase a completely different version of themselves, and I think it’ll be great!” said sophomore Alyssa Guo.

The album will be composed of 14 tracks that capture personal insights from each member. Members have said that there was extensive creative innovation from the group. They are revealed to have written over 100 songs before choosing the final 14.

In addition to that, they are having their first performance in nearly four years in Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul to promote their album. The performance is going to be live streamed globally on Netflix on Mar. 21 KST followed by a Netflix documentary on Mar. 27 KST. The promos will kick off the start of their comeback and year-long world tour, aiming to greet fans worldwide. The ticket war for the world tour was held this past January on Ticketmaster. According to reports, BTS has sold out stadiums and 1 million tickets in under 24 hours, highlighting the demand and global anticipation of the band, with many fans excited.

From when BTS debuted on June 13, 2013 to their skyrocketing Grammy nominated fame in 2021, their overwhelming popularity is motivated by their music and projects that promote self-love and mental health issues relating to youth. Their music explores deep themes and a variety of genres and concepts, such as hip-hop, school-age struggles, and literary-inspired storytelling. Many find BTS to be a source of comfort, inspiration, and reliability, as they often encourage many to try new things and pursue their dreams in different ways. Their popularity inclines others to explore other groups and view music in different ways.

“I started hearing about K-pop through peers and I heard a few songs from BTS when I would shop around stores. Once I heard how good it can sound I started to search up different [K-pop] groups,” said freshman Alexis Ramirez.

Overall, Arirang will present BTS’ artistry to the world. The music they release will showcase their true sides and cultural heritage, aiming to comfort and to align with their core themes to exemplify what they stand for.
