David Attenborough: The Naturalist Legend Who Changed Our World

Sir David Attenborough is best known for his narration over nature documentaries that can be found on popular streaming websites and apps such as Netflix or Disney+. He is the writer and narrator of the popular nine-part Life documentary series. A British convoy of nature, he is commemorated on his life work, dedicated to the wonders of nature. He’s not just a conservationist; Sir Attenborough has also been knighted, donning the title of “sir”. With his 100th birthday coming up this May, it’s an opportune time to reflect on his life and celebrate his achievements.

Born on May 8, 1926, Sir Attenborough developed a strong interest in Biology and Natural History.

He has written and narrated many popular documentaries like the Life series and more recently, The Blue Planet, State of the Earth, and Are We Changing Planet Earth?

“His documentaries are so cool; I really liked Blue Planet II since it showed me nature and life outside of the cities and urban areas we usually see,” said freshman Chloe Li.

In 1968, he became the Director of Television Programming for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), but later resigned from his position to work on a documentary series on a freelance basis, which was where his most well known and recent documentary films sprouted.

“Scenes of nature, especially through documentaries, I think, really bring out the essence of nature and calmness in people,” said freshman Adelynn Lee.

His just-narrated documentaries like Our Planet, Blue Planet II, David Attenborough: Life on Our Planet were aired much more recently. Blue Planet II won an Emmy Award in 2018 for Outstanding Narrator.

Sir Attenborough is a supporter and ambassador for many well-known wildlife organizations, such as the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Fauna & Flora, a conservation charity. Furthermore, he’s a speaking voice for nature and the corporations that support it, speaking at great assemblies, like the World Economic Forum, to leaders around the world.

His unique voice and accent and strong drive to represent the Earth pushed him into the limelight of documentaries.

“After watching an inspiring documentary like The Blue Planet, I feel I appreciate nature more on a daily basis… from the green leaves to simple birds chirping, it makes me feel calmer,” said freshman Keona Hsueh.

Sir Attenborough has reached audiences across the globe with his documentaries on the unseen parts of our planet.
