Thank You, Mr. Beckwith

Mr. Beckwith is a history teacher who teaches modern world history and AP US history in room D-114 at AHS. Every day, his classes are filled with students eager to learn a new lesson from him, or for him to share an exciting experience. This makes both him and his aura carries excitement.

One of the best things about Mr. Beckwith is the way he interacts with his students. It’s extremely casual, which particularly helps with those who are timid and don’t like to approach teachers. He does his best to let quiet people be heard alongside everyone else and is quite lenient in his due dates. Even his lessons do not seem entirely stiff and formal since he often incorporates stories and information that diverge from what’s on the page. It makes the atmosphere and general environment of his classroom very inviting and welcoming.

Mr. Beckwith also makes good use of his life experiences to enhance the course. The stories range from humorous occurrences to saddening recountments. Oftentimes, they have little to do with the lesson itself, but they do very well in teaching bits and pieces of history that do not exactly align with the textbook. Some, he uses to teach morals and life lessons, which is rather kind of him to do. Others, simply for intriguing displays of history, little pieces that help truly expose the past. A recurring tidbit he takes to is tales and stories about his family history. As they are rather personal stories, it helps build the connection he has with his students, whilst also inspiring within them a sense of closeness with history. A few are merely stories used to entertain his audience or act as a short intro to the day’s lesson. His incorporation of many different forms, ways, and directions of teaching lets him build and add dimension to his students’ understanding. He is also very involved in many outside academic organizations to help him improve his teaching skills and benefit his student’s knowledge. For example, he is currently having his modern world history classes test out new textbooks because the ones we have at the moment need to be updated.

Through his countless stories, relatable lecture tone, and close relationship with his students, one can truly see the passion he shares for his teaching. Mr. Beckwith is an inspiring teacher, an understanding communicator, and an overall excellent teacher.
