Hidden Secrets at Disneyland

Nicholas Chhay, Staff Writer

There are lots of hidden secrets at Disneyland that many people don’t know about. I’ll separate the secrets into three sections. Those three sections are rides, places, and the secrets in the park.

The first section is the rides that have secrets. One of the rides is the King Arthur’s Carousel Ride. On the carousel ride, there’s a horse on the outer edge that is dedicated to Julie Andrews, the actress that plays Mary Poppins in the movies. The horse was painted in her favorite colors, pink and blue. Some images were also painted on the horse that was in tribute to her. Those images were the shoes Mary Poppins wears, her umbrella, her initials, the number 50, and Mary Poppins flying down on her umbrella. The second ride I’ll be talking about is the Mad Tea Party ride in Fantasyland. The ride has 18 different teacups that have various speeds. According to many Disneyland guide books, he slowest teacup is the one that has hearts on it, while the fastest teacup is either the orange teacup with diamonds or the purple one. The final ride in this section is that the Matterhorn ride has a secret basketball court in the mountain. Most people think that this is just an urban myth, but it actually isn’t. This basketball court is in the backstage area of the Matterhorn Bobsleds and was used for cast members to play a quick game in between shifts.

The second section is that some places in Disneyland have some Easter eggs. One place at Disneyland that holds two secrets is the Cozy Cone Motel. In the motel, you’ll see a hidden Toy Story 2 Easter egg. At one end of the oval wooden table, you’ll see Buzz peeking out from one of the cones. On the other side of the table, you’ll see the feet of Buzz, Ham, and Rex poking out of the smaller cones. If you don’t know where this is from, it’s from Toy Story 2 when Buzz and the toys sneak across the street using traffic cones. Another secret is at Sleeping Beauty’s castle. Near the castle’s main gate, you’ll see an attraction that most people think is new, but it actually was built when Walt Disney was alive. This attraction tells the story of the 1958 film Sleeping Beauty. The last place I’ll be talking about is a place called Club 33. This club is a private club in New Orleans Square that is a members-only club. It’s also the only place in Disneyland that sells alcohol. People pay $10,000 a year plus a $25,000 non-refundable initiation fee.

The last section I’ll be talking about is the secrets in the park. By that, I mean secrets that are not in the places or rides at Disneyland. The first secret is in Fantasyland in the Alice in Wonderland section where you’ll catch glimpses of Chesire Cats hidden around the area. In the Mad Hatter shop, is where the most hidden Cheshire Cat is located. Over the cashier’s desk, there’s a mirror, and if you look deep inside it for some time you might spot the Cheshire Cat’s head. It may be difficult to see because of the angle and lighting. The second secret is in  Mickey’s Toontown. In the middle, there’s a fountain with a number of musical instruments with Mickey Mouse in the center holding a conductor’s baton. On the manhole covers, the same musical instruments are imprinted on each cover. If you jump on or touch the covers, you’ll hear the corresponding instrument play. The final secret is that there are about 200 feral cats at the park who are used to lower the rodent population of the park. The cats have feeding stations and medical care just in case.

There are many secrets left at Disneyland that a lot of people are still not aware of, So next time you go to Disneyland, why don’t you try and find the secrets that are left?
