In a guest lecture, professional dancer Alex Kessinger came to speak to the AHS dance department about different career pathways related to dance. Contrary to popular belief, there is actually a broad job market for dancers; this article is a brief insight into what dancers can do.

The commercial dance world is full of diverse opportunities for dancers, which is why they must be very versatile in training. Kessinger said they may attend auditions for “television commercials, music videos, film, Broadway, and even concert tours, which could ask for dancers of many different styles of dance, who can also act, sing, and improvise.” Dancers need to have a good network, as well as an agent to help find and prepare for gigs. Additionally, they always need to take good care of their appearance and keep their body in peak condition, avoiding any sort of junk food, alcohol, drugs, and cigarettes.

The audition process is unpredictable. Depending on what the role is, there may be different steps and cut-offs. Sometimes, it is even unclear what will be asked of you until you arrive at the audition, which is why it is crucial to study and master various skills. In one audition, Kessinger was even asked about her social media following.

As mentioned earlier, dancers must be in great condition. A hair follicle test may be given to check for substance use in the last three months. Depending on the results, it may help or jeopardize one’s position in the audition. Lastly, overall compatibility to the job is the final factor, yet it is the most unpredictable. “Anything from hair and height to facial expressions and small habits while dancing can give someone a disadvantage,” warned Kessinger. However, she assured the audience that these things usually cannot be controlled, so it is best to not take it personally and move on to the next job.

Dancers may also be interested in starting their own studio or company. Kessinger recommended for them to have knowledge in business and not to give up if it takes more time than expected. Hiring a good team of teachers and staff can help with the process. If managing is not the right path for you but you love choreography, she suggested working as a dance teacher or freelance choreographer where you can create dances for the commercial dance industry or at another studio.

People can directly make an impact in the dance world by working as a personal trainer, physical therapist, orthopedic surgeon, kinesiologist, or nutritionist. Dancers need to maintain their bodies in order to complete their job. Therefore, they need to work closely with experts who can advise them on their health.

In the end, dance can be applied to a surprising number of fields in the world. If dance is your passion, don’t be afraid to go out there and pursue it!
