As a result of Boys Varsity Golf’s recent championship win, a new CIF banner will be going up in the North Gym. With an overall total of 361 wins and surpassing their best score from last season in the first round, the boys won the North Division championship title for the CIF Southern Section of California.

Sophomore Warren Oetojo described how the team’s impressive work ethic and dedication led to an “improvement from last year”; its “extra practices helped [them] win the Northern Division.” In his perspective, the team “played more as a team than ever before” at its first round match. At this home game, every player had consistently low scores in the 70s and allowed the team to beat its previous season’s best total, 369, as a result of everyone’s effort.

After making it to the second round, the team traveled to San Marcos Golf Course in Santa Barbara, CA, to compete against other top tier schools. However, going into round two, the team experienced “tough conditions” that included a rushed game and a lack of warm-up time. As a result, according to Warren, the team just “didn’t play [its] best.” Although they placed 13th in the second round, the boys were still happy with their overall performance this season. Last year, the team didn’t make it as far, but now that it has, it is already looking to make it past round two next season.

With only one senior on the team, the team’s members are much younger than usual. Yet, the team’s lack of experience did not affect its overall season record. Remaining undefeated throughout the season, the team won the title of Pacific League Champions for the second year in a row. However, Warren points out that the team is far from perfect and had a rocky start. At the beginning of the season, the team had “problems with not being serious enough,” which resulted in “inconsistent” games and scores. Although these issues didn’t taint the team’s undefeated record, the team quickly recognized the possible repercussions that would follow if its negligence continued. Since scores are based on the team’s overall total, and the highest individual score is dropped, players tend to try to avoid being the highest. As a result, each player put in time and effort towards improving scores and lowering stroke count.

Now, the team doesn’t seem to have any issues, and its chemistry is only growing. Overall, the team seems to have had a great, accomplished season. Great work Apaches, and best of luck in the next season!
