On Mar. 29, one of the most anticipated movies of 2018 hits theaters. Directed by the legendary Steven Spielberg, Ready Player One is a science fiction action adventure. The film is set in 2045, when Earth is on the edge of chaos. The only way for life to be bearable for people is through OASIS, a global virtual reality universe. When James Halliday, the programming genius of the virtual world, passes away, he leaves not only his fortune, but also control of OASIS as an Easter egg in the simulation. This sparks a worldwide hunt for the digital egg in which the entire world participates, including Wade Watts, the young protagonist of the film. When he joins the search, he is spiraled into a virtual treasure hunt in a universe filled with mystery and danger.

Ready Player One has caught the attention of many people. However, it was originally a science fiction novel and Ernest Cline’s debut novel, which was published in 2011. This bestseller garnered a lot of success, and it’s no surprise that it earned many awards such as the Prometheus Award and Alex Award. However, even a year before the book’s publication, the film rights were purchased by Warner Bros., and Cline himself adapted the novel into a screenplay with the help of Eric Eason and Zak Penn. Soon after, Steven Spielberg signed on to direct, and the movie was set to premiere.

Critics have called Ready Player One “colorful, frenetic, and fun” with “nods to decades of movies and games.” The film adapts the novel to create a nostalgia-filled movie that shows the importance of escapism from technology and the value of human interaction. This science fiction action adventure is a greatly anticipated spectacle so run over to your local movie theater and watch Ready Player One!
