California’s Environmental Policy in Danger

The Californian government has expressed great concern over the environment. Los Angeles has been reported to be one of the major cities in the world to have the worst air pollution. However, whenever you go outside, instead of seeing a huge blanket of dark smog, you will notice that the sky is always clear and blue, with some exceptional white clouds. This observation would make you and many other Southern Californian residents wonder where the air pollution is in the area. That is because there’s no air pollution in the sky, at least not in a large quantity to be visible to us. The government has deployed many actions to clean and reduce the pollution in the air such as approving laws to restrict the amount of carbon emissions going into the air by vehicles and machines. The government’s insanely strict measures have transformed California’s atmosphere from one of the dirtiest to one of the cleanest in the country.

The state government has stayed loyal to its environmental policy and has refused to ease its power no matter how much pressure is given from the federal government or how high the cost is to keep it running. One such example is the refusal to adopt one of Trump’s plans to expand oil projects along the Californian coastline. Because of how much more pollution these facilities will dump into the air and sea, the state government rejected this federal plan as it violates its environmental policy. The environment has continued to be one of the top priorities the government concerns itself with as the state continues to be rated one of the most polluted regions in the country.

Unfortunately, the Californian government couldn’t hold on to its environmental policy and is losing grasp to it as time goes by. The biggest reason is that the economy is not doing so well in California. Ever since the Republicans decided to be frugal with the the federal government’s budget, the whole country is suffering from an economic decline. This decline is so large that even the most prosperous state in the country is being impacted. As California is going through an economic decline, the government could not hold onto its economic policy because it is very costly to maintain, and it indirectly affects its economy negatively. It is currently difficult for the government to ignore Trump’s plan to build more oil fields in California as these projects will bring a lot of income to the state and a huge number of jobs to California residents. Senator Hannah Beth Jackson used to support the environmental policy after experiencing numerous reports on oil spills all over the state. However, she began to have second thoughts on this policy. She concluded that “I don’t think people say ‘I love oil so much.’ It’s that ‘I have to feed my family’”. And so, the financial opportunity from this oil project and California’s economic fall have pressured the government to drop most of its environmental policy. Trump wins this time against California.
