In recent years, more people have started choosing plant-based diets, with them becoming a major sensation among teens and adults. A plant-based diet mainly focuses on foods that come from plants, like vegetables, fruits, grains, and nuts. Some people choose to go fully vegan and eat no animal products, while others just try to eat less meat than before.
A major reason people are switching to plant-based diets is because of health benefits. According to Griffith Foods, plant-based foods tend to be higher in fiber and lower in saturated fats. Fruits, vegetables, and legumes are a good source of essential vitamins and minerals as well. Vegetarian and Mediterranean diets have also been shown to reduce the risk of age associated non-communicable diseases, such as certain cancers, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory disease.
However, there are also downsides to a plant-based diet. Plant-based foods also have major weaknesses if the nutrition of your meals is not properly planned. They can be lower in vitamins such as vitamin B12, vitamin D, and iron, which are high in meat. Some plant-based products, particularly vegan meat mimic products, can have an unpleasant taste that some people may find unappealing. Many people get around this by taking supplements, or trying different recipes and brands to find options they like.
“My mom is vegan and doesn’t eat any meat at all, so I’ve gotten used to eating a lot of veggies and vegan foods like tofu and oats at home,” said freshman Scott Davidson.
Another big reason for the rise of plant-based diets is concern for the environment. Many people are becoming more aware of climate change, and want to make good choices that help the planet. Producing meat like lamb and beef lead to high greenhouse gas emissions, extensive land use, and high water consumption. By eating more plant-based foods, people feel like they are doing their part to lower their impact on the environment.
Freshman Carson Zheng said, “When my family first switched to eating plant-based foods, I didn’t think I’d like it, but there are actually a lot of good options, like plant-based pizza, and dairy free ice cream.”
What’s more, social media has played a huge role in normalizing plant-based diets. Apps such as Tiktok and Instagram are flooded with videos of simple vegan recipes and food hacks. These videos make eating plant-based foods look appetizing, and not as hard as people might think.
Furthermore, many restaurants and grocery stores have already adapted to this shift. Fast food restaurants like In N Out Burger and Dave’s Hot Chicken now offer plant-based options on their menu. This includes things like veggie burgers and meatless nuggets. Grocery stores like Whole Foods Market and Sprouts Farmers Market also have entire aisles for plant-based products, which makes it easier for people to find other options, and shows that this is not just a trend, but a long term change in how people are choosing to eat.
Plant-based diets are becoming more popular because of health, the environment, and how easy they are to follow now. Even though there are some challenges, there are lots of enjoyable options available.
