Despite new games being released every single year, Roblox, a game platform, continues to remain one of the most popular free platforms among teens.
Roblox is different from many other games because it is not just one single game; instead, players can explore thousands of different games created by other users and find the one they enjoy. This freedom and choices are major reasons why Roblox still dominates teen gaming today.
One of the biggest reasons for Roblox’s popularity is creativity. Roblox allows users to create their own worlds and experiences to their own liking. Players can design or play obstacle courses, role-playing games, simulations–the list goes on. These options give teens a chance to be creators of a game instead of just players.
Also, Roblox works like an online hangout world where friends can meet, chat, and play together. Many people log on not just to play games, but to spend time with their friends online. Roblox is different because players can explore a wide variety of experiences all within the same platform. It lets people have fun, and the social interaction keeps players coming back. Teens communicate using built-in text or voice chat while playing a wide variety of interactive experiences.
Many Roblox games include progression systems that give rewards when a certain rank or level is reached, which keeps players coming back. This keeps players engaged and makes them feel accomplished when they reach a goal.
“I enjoy Roblox, I can play with my friends or when I am very bored. There are tons of choices to choose from, so I can never get tired of it,” said freshman Austin Tran.
Recently, Roblox faced some backlash in 2025, primarily focused on severe child safety concerns, predatory content, and controversial statements by CEO David Baszucki. Investigations revealed widespread sexualized content targeting minors, while the company was criticized for banning YouTuber Schlep for exposing predators, rather than the predators themselves.
As of Jan. 8, Roblox requires facial age checks by a person for chat access. Users under 13-years-old now have direct messaging disabled by default, and those under 9-years-old have in-game chat disabled by default.
Despite the accusations and legal difficulties the game has faced, plenty of people still play Roblox.
“I enjoy playing Roblox with my friends, I have been playing Roblox for two years, and nothing weird has happened to me so far” said freshman Kingston Lin.
Roblox can be played on almost any device. Phones, PC, Xboxes, PlayStations, and VR headsets are making a huge community of players. This type of variety and game choices on the platform make Roblox still so popular for teens because it is simple but easy, and there are endless choices.
Roblox’s ability to combine creativity and social interaction makes there always something different to explore. It is a place where teens can build, connect with friends, and express their creativity.
