In their first game of the season, Arcadia High School (AHS) Boys Varsity Tennis team matched up against Flintridge Preparatory School on Feb. 24, winning 17-1.
The match started off friendly, each team introducing their star players who would no doubt give the other some good competition. Polite applause rang out from both sides as the introductions waned, and the match finally began.
As the players headed off to their respective courts, Coach Richard Chen expressed his hopes for the game. “It’s our first game of the season. We’ve got a couple freshmen starting, so it’d be good to test them out and see how they’re doing.”
Furthermore, Coach Chen also hoped for great results from the older members, stating, “most other guys have been on the team for several years, so it should be good.”
The doubles started with a good lead for AHS, as the players were able to exchange powerful blows and win more games within the set. The partnership in the doubles was apparent. Evidently, AHS began to dominate the doubles with resounding victories.
The singles produced some more evenly matched games, with Flintridge Prep showcasing their own prowess. Even so, Arcadia persevered, showing an impressive display of skills and ability to remain collected under the pressure. With exceptional teamwork and individual plays, victory seemed to be likely for AHS. Concluding the match AHS emerged from the courts with a resounding victory of 17-1.
The victory of this match was well-earned, marking a good start to the season. “Considering it was the first game of the season and one that ended with a good victory, a goal that the team has for the rest of the season is to improve on our communication during the doubles matches and how we can work together more smoothly,” said varsity sophomore Martin Wang.
Additionally, as the Boys tennis season progresses, Wang also believes the team must, “not get ahead of ourselves and continue training with the same grit, even if we win or lose.”
This victory was a wonderful start to this year’s Boys Tennis season, and the team will continue to work hard during their practice to gain some more.
