The Arcadia High School (AHS) Boys Varsity Soccer team faced Crescenta Valley High School (CVHS) on Feb. 3 in a tough game that ended with a score of 0-4. It also was senior night for the AHS seniors.
AHS started off the first half receiving the ball, keeping their offense and defense high. However, CVHS got a quick lead, scoring their first goal only 4 minutes into the game. CVHS was also able to score their second goal shortly after, fueling the mental pressure on AHS.
Although both teams displayed great efforts in attempting to score, the first half ended with a 0-4 lead by CVHS. Through many midfield battles, both offense and defense played a key role in gaining their lead. For offense, CVHS kept their passes short and under control. For defense, they worked hard to not let AHS into their side of the field. Additionally, for almost every two goals CVHS attempted to score, they scored one goal.
During the halftime break, the teams regrouped to go over strategy and replenish their strength. With AHS 4 points behind, they went back on the field full of determination to turn the game around.
The second half began with CVHS having possession. The teams went back and forth many times, never letting down their guard or giving up. It was extremely tiresome, but the crowd was full of energy that powered the players. Additionally, near the end of the game, goalkeeper Varsity Captain Lucas Gonzalez Valls was subbed in to play on the field.
“My favorite part of that night was definitely when my coach put me at striker for the last 10 minutes. I had a really good play and shot that almost went in,” said Valls.
However, the game ended with no further points scored, thus ending 0-4 with a win by CVHS.
Prior to the start of the game, AHS seniors celebrated senior night with their friends and family. Each senior player got to walk out through the spirit tunnel, taking pictures and being appreciated for their efforts by the people around them. Although AHS ended with a loss, it was still a memorable and fun night for all the Boys Varsity Soccer players.
“Looking back to our season, I’m really proud of what we accomplished. We started the season 1-6, with no confidence and a lot of injuries, but we built chemistry outside the field and together, we turned the season around. Although we weren’t able to qualify to playoffs, the ending of the season was special for me, and I will always remember this group of amazing people and all the memories created on the way,” said Valls.
