For the past few years, buying Random Access Memory Cards (RAM) has been an essential and affordable part of building or upgrading a PC. But in 2025, those rock-bottom prices changed overnight as global demand surged and supply was limited. What was once a predictable and inexpensive component has become one of the most volatile and expensive parts currently in the tech market.
This shift comes primarily because Artificial Intelligence (AI) tech companies are buying up the supply of memory for data centers, while manufacturers reduce production of consumer-grade RAM in favor of high-profit return values in AI hardware.
Industrial analysts say that the three major RAM makers–Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron–have shifted their production lines toward server-grade and high-bandwidth memory for AI data centers. Consumer RAM, which was once a steady source of revenue, has now become secondary, leaving less supply for desktops and laptops. Micron has even announced plans to exit the consumer memory lines entirely to focus on more profitable AI markets.
“Everything I bought for my PC doubled in just a few months. I currently have a 32GB kit for school and gaming, and it’s almost $300 now. I didn’t even know the AI industry could affect students like this,” said sophomore Ethan Escala. “I originally paid $130, but the shortage doesn’t really affect me as I have been stocking up.”
The ripple effect extends beyond gamers as people face difficult choices between delaying purchases or buying lower-capacity kits. AI-driven demand is not only shrinking the supply of available modules, but also reducing retailer stock.
“The RAM shortage today is a sign that greater demands for AI and other computational technology are able to outpace production. And as a student, the RAM shortage feels frustrating because it means that the price of PC’s and laptops will be more expensive,” said sophomore Jimmy Luo
The situation is worsened due to the fact that new manufacturing capacity for RAM takes years to develop. Even if factories expand production, most of that growth will be directed to AI-focused memory, leaving consumer products constrained. This combination of soaring demand, production shifts, and limited stock has made RAM one of the most unpredictable components on the market this year.
As AI data centers continue to expand, experts predict that consumer RAM shortages and high prices may persist well into the future. With AI being such a profitable market and quickly expanding, affordable RAM for personal and educational use may be out of reach and will most definitely continue to rise in price.
