My relationship with my brother was rocky on day one. I often picked a fight with my brother and would purposely trick him into doing the things I want. As the elder sibling, I assumed the responsibility of being the “example” for my brother to follow. I was told my grades must be high, so my brother would follow. I must be obedient, so that my brother would too.
I understood the logic behind setting an example for my brother. As the elder sibling, I was meant to serve as a role model for my brother. But as a child, I couldn’t handle the pressure to be perfect solely for the sake of my brother. It seemed as though I was blamed for not setting a good example for every wrongdoing of my brother. It felt unfair. My young heart was bitter and vengeful towards him.
Yet, despite my struggle in being a proper older sister, my brother still showed kindness towards me. He still offers me the first bite of his meal, and he still speaks to me with softness. He’s still there for me when I need him. I recognized my mistake in holding a bitter grudge against him–he had no fault in the first place.
His endless kindness, thoughtfulness, and forgiveness inspires me to constantly work towards becoming a more compassionate and empathetic person. His determination and bravery to always fiercely chase after his passions shape the will-power and work habits I hold today. His amiable nature and ability to always make the crowd laugh and brighten the mood serve as a model that I consistently work towards. The role of setting an example had reversed.
My brother’s carefree and joyous nature always pushes me to loosen up. His lightheartedness reminds me that I only have one life. Why be so stubborn and pedantic when there’s so much more to life? He reminds me to enjoy the little moments, preserve my relationships, and let myself go at times.
Brother, thank you for showing me warmth and kindness. Thank you for being there for me even when I bother you about the smallest inconveniences that I could totally solve myself. Thank you for being the source of my courage and unwavering persistence. Thank you for always bringing a smile to my and many others’ faces. Thank you for shaping me into a better person, and thank you for continuously serving as my model to being an even more compassionate and empathetic person.
I was born as your role model, but funny enough, you became my role model.
