On my first day of high school, I was nervous for all my classes, but especially for Modern World History. Since the subject is somewhat hard to grasp, I hadn’t been particularly hopeful. I had always enjoyed history, too, so I was worried that I might not get a teacher who could make the lessons as engaging and meaningful as they were to me.
I was pleasantly surprised in the first few classes of the week. Ms. Madeline Park was easily able to turn every single lesson into something that connected to our lives, no matter if it dated generations or centuries ago. She could make near-ancient events like the French Revolution or philosophies from the Enlightenment relatable. Even if we were just doing lecture notes, her explanations would be so creative and full of energy that there’d be no way for anyone to get bored or fall asleep.
She is passionate about teaching, and I can truly tell that she loves what she does. Ms. Park puts so much effort into helping her students succeed, and it honestly shows. Instead of just reading from a textbook, she uses activities that almost allow us to experience those times firsthand. A specific example that I really enjoyed, apart from group discussions and projects, would be the Industrial Revolution simulation. It felt so close to the working conditions that we had previously talked about, and renewed everyone’s interest in the topic.
Ms. Park is very understanding and fair, as well, but she addresses those who slack off or misbehave accordingly. Additionally, everyone gets a chance to participate and is encouraged to express their opinions. What I appreciate most would be how Ms. Park, in such a delicate climate nowadays, still makes sure to be impartial whenever we discuss people’s opinions. She doesn’t lean heavily into any side and always points out the advantages and disadvantages of every position.
Also, though her tests may be difficult at times, they are all based on the material that we have learned. Her study guides are extremely helpful, and she goes over everything before.
In all, Ms. Park is truly one of my favorite teachers; her dedication and care have made this class into something that I look forward to every school day. I know that I’m definitely not the only one who feels this way. You make history feel so alive; you’ve made such an impact on your students, and we’re all so lucky to have you as our teacher. Thank you, Ms. Park, for all the time and heart that you put into teaching us.
