If you’d ask me to describe my siblings in two words, I’d probably say “crazy” and “foolish”. But behind all the chaos and silly choices is a love I wouldn’t trade away for anything.
My relationship with my siblings is similar to that of most people. It’s filled with so much bickering and sarcasm, but genuine care for one another. Every time I got into a big fight with my siblings or had a small quarrel, my mom would always tell me the same thing.
“Be kind to your brother and sister; soon, they’ll be the closest people to you.”
I remember when I was younger, I would always think that saying was silly and didn’t really mean anything. But over the years, I’ve come to realize how deep that saying truly is.
A memory I distinctly recall was when my siblings and I all got COVID-19. This was when I was in sixth grade, around the first week of December. When my sister first tested positive for COVID, I was honestly super worried for her. I saw firsthand how she was drained of all her energy and seemed pretty miserable. Even though we all had to wear masks inside and couldn’t really be near my sister, I still tried my best to interact with her. Eventually, my sister spread her illness to both me and my brother. Although it wasn’t an ideal situation, it did mean that we didn’t have to isolate ourselves from one another.
During the weeks of quarantine, the only people we could really talk to were each other. We spent countless hours playing video games like “Roblox” and “Just Dance,” watching movies, and, of course, arguing from time to time. Even though we all thought it sucked that we were stuck inside, we were all very grateful that we still had each other to keep company. The long, boring days of quarantine passed a lot faster with my brother and sister around; they always brought some kind of entertainment and made the dullest days enjoyable.
Whether it was at the dinner table, where we would exchange glances whenever our parents said something questionable, or racing to see who could bike to Grandma’s house the fastest, they never made a day boring.
As silly as it may sound, one day I came across a video on my For You page that said, “One of your siblings will see all the funerals, one will see none, and one won’t have any of them at theirs.” For some reason, that line really hit me. I honestly have never thought about what would happen to us all as we got older. A funeral without any of my siblings present would feel like finishing a chapter with missing pages, just incomplete.
That same day, I showed my brother and sister the same video, but they didn’t really get it. They laughed and said that I was being dramatic, but to me, it meant something deeper. It reminded me that life changes quickly, and one day, the moments we take for granted—the laughter, bickering, and teasing—will soon become distant memories.
To me, my siblings are truly one of the most important people in my life, and I cherish every moment we have together. Even though there are days when I wonder how these “monsters” are related to me, I know that as we grow older and spend less time together, the memories we’ve made will always hold a special place in my heart.
No matter how far apart we’ll go, my brother and sister will always be my first friends and the people who’ve truly seen me grow.
