The North Gym was filled with hundreds of students buzzing with excitement on Mar. 14 as ASB presented their annual Spring Pep Assembly. Students were in for a great show as ASB announced the student performances, spring sports teams, the prom theme reveal, and played a variety of games.
First to take the stage was AHS’ World Line, performing their program “A Rare Bird Upon This Earth.” Dressed in long, white outfits with matching gray leggings, the students showcased their dynamic performance, mixing together elegant tunes such as “Swan Lake” with booming drums. Freshman violinist Kevin Xie was responsible for the melodies of “Swan Lake” as he performed alongside percussionists with an electric violin. Using the entire floor to their advantage, World Line then brought out moveable steel props to climb on. The program ended with the musicians removing the outer layer of their clothing to reveal a bird-like costume design underneath.
“Working with ASB on all of our pep rallies is such a huge opportunity for everyone to bond and work closely together. All of the planning and efforts were all worth it in the end when I saw the crowd cheering with joy!” said ASB freshman class president Allison Chen.
Soon after, World Guard reorganized the gym floor to prepare for their performance: “The Octopus.” To match the theme, World Guard was dressed in black and rainbow leotards to resemble the tentacles of an octopus. The performance incorporated a variety of elements, such as rifles, octopus themed flags, and giant tentacle props.
ASB senior secretary Sergio Alcazar then announced the first game of the rally, which was musical chairs. Volunteers from the audience gathered on the gym floor to compete against each other, but this classic game came with a twist. ASB would call out items competitors needed to get from the audience after the music stopped. To win, they would need to return in time to sit on a chair. The gym filled with laughter as items like Birkenstocks and “a man in ASB wearing a tie” were announced.
ASB athletics commissioner senior Reena Hsieh then introduced the Varsity spring sports. First to come out of the tent was Track & Field, followed by Boys Golf, Baseball, Badminton, Softball, Boys Tennis, Boys Volleyball, and Swim & Dive. Each team had an amusing entrance that ended with a unified chant, showing off their strong school spirit.
Adding to the school spirit, Pep Squad was next to perform. They took the audience’s breath away with their high jumps and turns.
The last game of the rally was a competitive pom-pom tag. Two students from each grade level would attempt to grab the most amount of pom-poms off the other grade level students’ backs.
ASB then handed the mic over to Prom Committee to reveal this year’s prom theme. Prom Committee revealed the theme to be “A Night In Bloom” and that it would be held at the Los Angeles (LA) River Center in Downtown LA on May 17th.
“Figuring out the theme was a pretty long process because the most difficult part about planning was figuring out a name. We had a theme ready from the beginning since our admin chose the venue, but solidifying the name was at least a month-long process,” said Prom Committee member sophomore Angie Wong.
As ASB Director Mrs. Stefani Spitz walked onto the gym floor, she was suddenly interrupted by students from the crowd who took the spotlight instead. It was the senior flash mob, an annual tradition where all the seniors perform dances they’ve prepared for weeks. Dancing to songs like “BANG BANG BANG” by BIGBANG and “PUSH 2 START” by Tyla, the seniors made sure to go out with a bang.
To finish off the show, all students joined together to sing AHS’ Alma Mater before heading back to class. This year’s Spring Pep Assembly was truly a moment to celebrate school spirit and have fun amidst the stressful year.
