Be prepared to turn back the clock to the late 1970s as Arcadia High School (AHS) Stage is proud to present 9 to 5: The Musical! Featuring music and lyrics by the iconic Dolly Parton, this energetic show will hit the stage on Mar. 13 and 14 at 7 p.m., and on Mar. 15 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased through the AHS Stage website, or from students working on the production. Students can purchase tickets for $15, general admission for $20, and VIP tickets for $35.
9 to 5 follows the story of three intrepid ladies—Violet, Doralee, and Judy—who overthrow their sexist, egotistical boss and shake up the business world. The feminist musical is not only full of zany humor, catchy songs, and dazzling dances, but it also is a great commentary regarding equality in the workplace and fighting sexism.
Offstage, AHS’s Women’s Literature class has provided educational historical context to the production. With diligent research, they created a timeline of major events in the fight for women’s rights, such as pay equity milestones and advances in rights at work. The timeline is being displayed at the AHS library, encouraging the students to learn more about the time and its fight.
AHS stage crew has worked diligently to replicate the 9 to 5 world in impeccable detail. From applying multicolored backdrops to assembling vintage office accessories, every set item has been worked on tirelessly to immerse spectators into a 1970s office setting.
“The most enjoyable thing is to see the end result—how it evolves from fragments of wood into an entire set whole,” said senior Emery Li.
Their dedication to authenticity creates the setting so that it feels real, down to the smallest details of rich color schemes and period props. Costumes are also highly significant in depicting the nature of the time. According to the office dress code of the late ’70s, the attire highlights the shifting roles of women in society as they acquired power and sought equality.
“For a lot of us, this was a really fun process because of the outfits and the era we are representing. It holds a big meaning, and we can’t wait to educate our audience,” said senior Elisha Chen.
Fans can expect engaging performances, high-energy choreography, and an energetic soundtrack. The show has several exhilarating dance numbers that incorporate props to drive home pivotal scenes. Every number and scene contributes to the overall theme of determination, resilience, and transformation.
“We have worked for months and are so excited to show you this play! There are so many great acts and dialogues that will keep you on the edge of your seat,” said senior Ashley Chen.
With a fantastic cast, dedicated crew, and a story as relevant now as it ever was, 9 to 5 is an event not to be missed. Don’t miss the chance to witness the talent and dedication of AHS students as they bring this uplifting tale to the stage. Mark your calendars and join us for a night of music, laughter, and inspiration!
