In preparation for the fifth grade Pacific Palisades (Pali) field trip for Hugo Reid Elementary School, The Seniors of Merit at Work (SMW) held a fundraiser on Thursday, Nov. 7 from 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Over 50 parents and kids participated, filling the atmosphere with laughter, friendly competition, and community spirit.
Participants purchased $5 Bingo cards, hoping to win a variety of prizes. The prizes were a Starbucks gift card, a reusable water bottle, and a Keurig coffee maker. Arcadia High School English teacher Mrs. Claudia Grubbs decided to play a few games, winning a few prizes herself.
“I found watching members of SMW almost win Bingo, a fond memory I will hold of the evening,” said Mrs. Grubbs. “They technically won the grand prize Bingo game, but because they hadn’t actually purchased cards, they were ineligible. They did get to eat all the leftover treats. It was also memorable as I was one of the first winners of Bingo and my fifth grade son (who attends Hugo Reid) picked a heating pad for my prize!”
“It was such a fun night seeing so many Hugo Reid kids from all grade levels attend with their parents, and it was so wonderful knowing that SMW helped Hugo Reid raise over $1,000 for the trip to Pali,” said Grubbs.
In between the rounds of Bingo, the attendees had the opportunity to take a break with a variety of snacks. The participants could choose from bags of buttery popcorn, chips, candies, sodas, and Capri-Suns. The snack bar was very popular, as the line continued to grow, surrounded with conversations and cheers.
The Bingo Night fostered lots of community involvement, allowing family and friends to bond as well as support educational experiences of local students.
“I had a very fun time interacting with my fellow Hugo Reid Raiders when selling candy and drinks. I also have to say, the hot chocolate was so good!”, SMW member Annika Chan reflected.
Chan also claimed that hearing people call out “Bingo” before choosing their prize was very memorable.
“I loved the energy of everyone, especially the kids being so immersed in playing Bingo. The event was a success with parents and students coming together to support the Pali field trip while having fun!” said Chan.
