As this last year of high school progresses, I increasingly realize what my experience with Arcadia Unified School District’s Digital Communications Internship (AUSD DCI) has meant to me. I never knew whether I’d be accepted when applying, but here I am one year later, noticing how DCI has shaped me as a person. Every meeting reminds me that this is my final year, making each moment and memory even more valuable.
DCI was one of my first creative outlets for professional work. I learned how to handle my first DSLR (Nikon D7500), edit videos, network, and build projects from scratch. Although those early days were a bit intimidating, it wouldn’t take long before I knew I was part of something extraordinary within DCI. From expanding ideas in our Monday meetings to bonding during end-of-semester celebrations, I have seen firsthand the rewarding work that can and has been done here.
First and foremost, I would like to express my immense gratitude to our advisors. Mr. Foran has given us important feedback and support, reminding us repeatedly that he is always present, whether for advice or guidance. The time with Ms. Nuuvali was short, yet I still remember her encouraging me to be proactive and not to waste any experience, good or bad. Ms. Cienfuegos attends each meeting with a warm smile, filling the room with positive energy. I am grateful she has been able to be here, including her compassionate presence and support.
I appreciate DCI so much for letting me get to know such amazing people: Alysia taught me about website management and even helped me choose classes for senior year; Skye, whom I’d hardly said a word to before, bonded with me over a Taylor Swift album review. The seniors last year helped me adjust, teaching me both the skills and the spirit of DCI. And to my fellow members this year, thanks for your patience and sense of humor. Being around Jayeesha, Allison, and Myriam is a pleasure, whose energies are infectious. Evelyn, Rianna, and Avani are kind and patient; Stephanie and Jodie inspire me with their creativity. Alaina is gentle and gives the best feedback; Ashley and I have related to many things; Vania helped me grow from feeling unsure about my abilities to feeling accomplished.
DCI has given me more than technical skills: friendships, memories, and a sense of purpose. Going into my final year, I am thankful for every single moment with this incredible community, knowing that everything we built together will always be a part of who I am.
