Whether you’re looking for a new hairstyle or just planning for the future, having a good haircut can make or break your looks. It’s crucial to pick out a hairstyle that’ll not only bring out your best features, but is also flattering on your face.
The first hairstyle that you should consider is the bob. The bob cut is a hairstyle that first became popular in the early 1920s, and with modernization, the bob seems to still be trending. The bob has many different variations; one is the old money bob, which is a hairstyle that combines blunt lines with minimal layering that makes the finishing look very soft but also voluminous. Another variation of the bob is the box bob haircut. Like the name suggests, the box bob creates an overall square shape that frames your face and gives the illusion of extra volume. The bob is a versatile haircut that looks great with any face shape. It especially compliments those with a rounder face shape.
Another hairstyle that is rising in popularity is curtain bangs. Curtain bangs are strands of hair in the middle of your head that are cut short in the center and are longer on the sides, so it can create a swoop-like motion outward, like a curtain. They are very similar to face framing hair pieces, but are different from the traditional bangs we think of today. While traditional bangs are used to cover up the entire forehead, curtain bangs are meant to be styled away from the face in order to add more volume. Because of this, curtain bangs are a lot more versatile than your average bangs and are even easier to manage. With curtain bangs, you can allow them to grow out and give you a nice, subtle layering. Curtain bangs look great with almost every face shape (round, oval, square, diamond, heart, and rectangular), but this hairstyle should be avoided with people who have a wider forehead, since the curtain bang can emphasize the forehead with some hair strands.
“When getting curtain bangs, I really recommend for people to get just framing. And make sure they’re really thin and not too thick…This is because I noticed that having thick curtain bangs look very flat [and not flattering] when unstyled. Plus they don’t really look good on everyone compared to thin curtain bangs,” said freshman Allison Chen, who used to cut her own curtain bangs.
If these two hairstyles haven’t peaked your interest, you then should consider the wolf cut hairstyle. The wolf cut is a combination of a 70s shag look and an 80s mullet. This haircut is all about layers, with shorter layers in the front and top of your head and longer in the back. With all the layers in this hair, it creates lots of texture and adds volume, creating a sort of “edgy” look. The wolf cut looks great on people with round face shapes, a sharp jawline, or sharp features like high cheekbones.
“The wolf cut looks really cool when it is styled, but it’s a harder hairstyle to maintain compared to other cuts. With the wolf cut, you’re gonna have to style it everyday, or else your hair [might] look very flat,” said freshman Katryna Nguyen when asked what her overall opinion on the wolf cut was.
Last but definitely not least, is the butterfly haircut. The butterfly haircut is a many layered cut that focuses on the layers around your chin and the ends of your hair. Unlike many other layered cuts, the butterfly haircut tends to be more about adding the shape of butterfly wings and less about adding texture and dimension. Instead, the butterfly cut adds “feathered” layers that can add more volume to thin or fine hair, making the hair look softer. It’s a lot more rounded compared to a layered cut and a wolf cut. The butterfly haircut suits people with the face shape of an oval or heart and with fine or thin hair.
Freshman Aisha Syed shared her opinion on the butterfly haircut that she’s been getting since 2020.
“The butterfly haircut is really cute because I like having lots of layers in my hair. The layers look very nice with natural curly hair since it gives it a lot more volume and less poofness without layers. It especially looks very good when I wear it naturally or do a blowout. I would definitely recommend this hairstyle for people with curly hair,” said Syed.
When choosing your next haircut, it’s always important to consider which hairstyle will suit your face best and if you’re willing to style your hair everyday. Hopefully these four haircuts have inspired you on what your next haircut will be, or have given you a new haircut idea.
