Arcadia High School’s (AHS) Girls JV Tennis Team played against Burroughs on Sept. 10. Arcadia defeated Burroughs High School (BHS) by a large margin, winning 14-4. Despite having temperatures well above 100, both teams lathered on sunscreen, drank plenty of water and pushed through the unforgiving temperatures.
The game started out with hard hits from both sides. While BHS had improved greatly from last year, they continued to make mistakes while serving; often struggling to get it over the net. AHS saw this as an opportunity to capitalize on these mistakes. In the doubles game between freshman players Juliet Crew and Alyssa Guo, AHS defeated BHS 6-1, AHS, in both the singles and doubles games took the early lead and held onto it. However, both teams demonstrated great displays of effort.
Optimistic and cheerful, team manager and volunteer sophomore Brayden Lu said “This season has been pretty amazing for them, they have been winning a lot of games, I think we for sure are going to win, 18-0 ”
While Lu’s enthusiastic predictions did partly come true, the team won by a margin of 14, not 18. However, it was still an impressive game, as it was hard to play in the evening heat with the extreme temperatures. BHS fought hard but the practices, time and attention detail AHSput into their game shone through, leading to the victory.
When freshman Jiannie Ma was asked about her performance during the game, she said, “I did okay, it was really hot but I pushed through and bageled them and secured the win.”
With a tennis game involving nine singles games and nine doubles games, both are crucial in securing the win; a single bad game can determine the result of the match. The team has been successful this season, with a record of 2-2-0. A main driving factor in this team’s success has been their dedication to practices and good attitude when it comes to mistakes. All players cooperate and communicate extremely well, and when mistakes are made, the players learn from it, instead of being frustrated.
“The season has been pretty great so far. I think the most important thing about tennis is having proper coordination and cooperation with your partner. It’s really important to communicate as that’s how we [will] succeed.” said team captain junior Flora Tan.
The training the team has been putting in translates to these wins. Despite the heat and dry conditions, they pushed through and earned the win. Be sure to cheer on the Girls Tennis team at their upcoming games.
