Tri-M held its induction ceremony on Sept. 12 in the AHS Performing Arts Center (PAC), welcoming over 50 new members into the society. Both new and returning members filed into the PAC, anticipating the start of the event.
Of the many honor societies at Arcadia High School (AHS), the Tri-M Honor Society (Tri-M) is the only one dedicated exclusively to celebrating the efforts that students put into musical performance.
The ceremony began with speeches from the Tri-M Officers, who introduced the team and the chapter adviser, Ms. Pin Chen, as well as some background regarding the honor society.
Tri-M stands for ‘Modern Music Masters,’ which reflects the standards that its members are held to. In order to qualify for membership, students must earn an A/A+ for two semesters of a music class at AHS and have at least a 3.0 GPA; returning members must complete music-related community service hours.
The Tri-M officers all worked to plan out the ceremony to ensure everything ran smoothly.
“We’ve been planning [the ceremony] since summer,” said Tri-M Secretary junior Juliette Fang when asked about the preparation that went into the event. “This includes securing dates to use the PAC and ordering all the items, including certificates, pins, and polo shirts that we will need for the upcoming year.”
Fang added that the induction ceremony is “one of the few events where the [more than] 100 members in Tri-M can come together, and it’s a great way to start off the new year!”
The new members were then sworn in with a pledge that captured the goals and ideals of Tri-M. After that, each newly inducted student walked up to the stage to receive their pins and certificates. The returning members did the same after, going in order of semesters they had been in the honor society.
Finally, it was time for the Loyalty Song. The curtain rose, revealing instrumentalists across different music programs, who performed the song called “Music Masters Hail to the Thee” together. Members were encouraged to stand up from their seats and sing along, following the lyrics with the provided online programs.
“I think it was nice that we got to meet other people in the honor society,” sophomore Hailey Wang, a newly inducted member, said. “It was an enlightening experience.”
