Musts of Japan

Nicole Soong, Writer

Tokyo is one of the most visited Asian countries. However, people often don’t know where to go and what to eat on their first trip. So, I will be your tour guide and tell you all the musts of Japan!

Must go:

1. Tokyo Skytree
The Skytree is 634 meters tall, making it the highest tower in the world. It is a television broadcasting tower and landmark of Tokyo. The tower is blue and white, and you can see all of Tokyo from the top of the tower!

2. Sensō-ji Temple
This temple, which has the longest history in Tokyo, is a Buddhist temple located in Asakusa. It is one of Tokyo’s most colorful and popular temples. Nakamise, a shopping street measuring longer than 200 meters, leads from the outer gate to the temple’s second gate, the Hozomon. Typical Japanese souvenirs such as yukatas and folding fans, as well as various traditional local snacks from the Asakusa area are sold along the Nakamise. The Asakusa Shrine, built in the year 1649 by Tokugawa Iemitsu, stands a few dozen meters to the left of the temple’s main building. The huge lantern, which weighs 700 kg, is the symbol of the temple and it draws the most tourists in all of Japan.

3. Meiji Shrine
The Meiji Shrine, otherwise known as Meiji Jingu, is a shrine dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his consort, Empress Shoken. The shrine was destroyed during the Second World War but was rebuilt shortly thereafter. Meiji Jingu is one of Japan’s most popular shrines.

4. Odaiba Seaside Park
This park is a manmade green land that is popular among Japanese youth, and it is also a place for most Japanese drama filming. The shopping center, Diver City, is also a place for lunch!

5. Takeshita Street
Takeshita Street is a well-known shopping stop for tourists. It has the most popular clothing and restaurants, especially the most popular crepes stores.

6. Tokyo Station
Opened on Oct. 3, 2012, Tokyo Station includes most of the important lines of the Japan railroad. It also contains a lot of the shops and cafes.

7. Tokyo Disney
Tokyo Disney was established in 1983 and is based on the amusement park in the U.S. It was merged with the Japanese unique items, and the rides are suitable for all ages.

8. Tokyo DisneySea
Tokyo DisneySea is a fantasy theme park at the Tokyo Disney Resort. Inspired by the myths and legends of the sea, Tokyo DisneySea is made up of seven themed ports of call: Mediterranean Harbor, Mysterious Island, Mermaid Lagoon, Arabian Coast, Lost River Delta, Port Discovery and American Waterfront.

9. Ghibli Museum
The animation and art museum of Miyazaki Hayao’s Studio Ghibl is one of Japan’s most famous animation studios. The museum itself is whimsically designed in the distinct style of the studio’s films, and many of its famous characters are there, including a life-sized robot from Castle in the Sky in the rooftop garden.

10. Ameya-Yokochō
Ameya-Yokochō is a busy market street along the Yamanote Line tracks between Okachimachi and Ueno Stations. The name “Ameyoko” is short for “Ameya Yokocho” (candy store alley), as candies were traditionally sold there. Today, various products such as clothes, bags, cosmetics, fresh fish, dried food, and spices are sold along Ameyoko.

Must eat:

1. Ramen
You just can’t miss out the traditional Japanese ramen when you are in Japan. The rich-flavored soup with chewy noodles is just one of the traditional symbols of Japan.

2. Sushi
The fish agriculture industry in Japan helped form the culture of Japanese sushi. You can walk into one of the sushi stores and you will not be disappointed.

3. Seafood donburi
The luxurious seafood donburi mixes sashimi and Japanese rice together. With this donburi, you can taste various seafood at the same time.

4. Fried pork chop
This is one of the main western foods that the Japanese have. The juicy fried pork chop with sweet Japanese rice is just teasing your appetite!

5. Chicken & egg donburi
The name of this illustrates the nature of the dish, which is to mix chicken and egg together (as a chicken is the mother of egg). The smooth chicken mixed with the egg is just the best!

6. Strawberry cake
Japan has a nickname, “The Kingdom of Dessert”, so it has various kinds of dessert, whether it is traditional Japanese dessert or western cakes. The appearance of the sweet cakes will just make your mouth water.

7. Crepes
The Japanese just love crepes, so you can see a crepe cafe on every other block. They have lots of different flavors and combinations that you just have to try out!

8. Tempura
Tempura is one of the traditional foods of the Japanese culture. The crispy shrimp and other vegetables are just delicious and appetizing.

If you have the chance to go to Japan, you must try these. You will not regret it!
