The Arcadia High School (AHS) Boys Tennis team had an exciting victory against Crescenta Valley High School (CV) on Tuesday, Mar. 22. Varsity played at home and Junior Varsity played at CV. The final score for Varsity was 16-2, and junior varsity was 13-5. Coach Damon Lieu and Coach Richard Chen are the respective coaches for Varsity and JV.

There were nine singles matches and nine doubles matches. Varsity members only lost two doubles matches and won all their singles. JV only lost one single but had a rougher time losing four doubles.

For Bryce Wong, this was his fifth time playing CV since coming to AHS, but the team’s first time this season. Bryce is a senior and a co-captain of the Varsity team.

“I think AHS was able to win because we were more fit than CV. CV stacked their best players in doubles and our singles swept them in about an hour,” said Wong. “After the first round [of doubles], the CV players seemed to run out of steam, and we won the rest of our matches.”

Freshman Samuel Li who is on JV shared that it is his first time playing CV, and teammate sophomore Joshua Law gave his thoughts about how AHS was able to beat CV’s players.

“AHS was able to win against Crescenta Valley because everyone persisted through their games and gave their best effort in order to win these matches,” stated Law. “We were able to stay consistent throughout all our matches, leading us to our victory.”

JV Co-Captain sophomore Matthew Ho also reflected on the game, taking away improvements for JV.

“The players put in their best effort on a tough game that day, and we all left in good spirits and had a good time. CV was a strong opponent, but with our own determination and skill we pulled to win the majority of the games,” said Ho. “Certainly, considering the losses mostly originating from the doubles’ side, we would like to work on better communication between the players.”

Even with such a large margin in the winning score, both teams merely celebrated, but rather focused on improvements to be made for upcoming games.

“We celebrated the fact that we knew that CV would stack their doubles teams, and we only lost two matches,” said Wong. “However, we know that next time we play CV that they will definitely mix things up, so we have to look out for our future matches.”

“We didn’t really celebrate; it was really just a competition, and we enjoyed being a part of it and with each other more than winning,” said Ho.

Both JV and Varsity are undefeated this season. Best of luck to them for the rest of the season.
