Movie Review: “Uncharted”

Vritti Godani, Staff Writer

Based on the Uncharted video game, the movie Uncharted was released on Feb. 18, starring Mark Wahlberg and Tom Holland as its leads. The movie focused on adventure and bravery and is supposed to be a prequel to Nathan Drake’s storyline in the game.

For starters, the dialogue of the film was bland. Most of the time, the dialogue felt like a history lecture or something straight out of a textbook and was not as engaging as I expected it to be. Since the game is very action-packed and thrilling, I expected the dialogue and ambiance of the movie to be the same. However, the dialogue puts the audience to sleep, and most of the stunts are done by Tom Holland, who plays one of the protagonists, Nathan Drake.

In the game, Tom Holland’s character, Nathan Drake, is known to be funny and witty. However, the movie deprived Nathan Drake of his humor, and most of his lines felt dry and as though he was trying too hard to be funny. Speaking of humor, the jokes in the movie failed to make the audience laugh. Some jokes revolved around Mark Wahlberg’s character, Sully, being too old. However, Mark Wahlberg did not look or sound as old as the character was intended to be, leading to the jokes being unsuccessful.

“I didn’t really get some of the jokes in the movie,” said junior Allison Bernardini. “The jokes had potential, but it didn’t really match the cast or the energy of the movie, so the humor was really dry.”

Furthermore, there is no chemistry between the cast and the characters. Although the cast is filled with talented actors, no bond or relationship can be sensed through a screen, and they all seem very distant from each other.

“I was really excited to watch the movie, especially after they announced the cast,” said junior Emilie Conner. “But when I went to watch it, I found that the cast seemed like they didn’t get along, and they all seemed very distracted or in their own spheres.”

In terms of the plot, there was barely any. Yes, the movie is focused on finding treasure, but most of the movie is filled with clearly edited action scenes and unhumorous jokes. The plot had so much lost potential, which upset many fans and people who were eager to see the movie.

Overall, the movie disappointed many fans. The movie had loads of potential to be a fun, action-packed, adventurous movie with a thrilling storyline, but it failed to satisfy many people eager to watch the movie. In short, don’t waste your time by watching Uncharted
