April the Giraffe

The Internet is home to an abundant amount of content, ranging from music to cat videos. There is no way to determine whether a topic will become popular or not. Currently, a certain mammal has garnered the attention of the media: April the giraffe.

At the age of 15-years-old, April has captured the hearts of millions of online users. There are multiple news stations live-broadcasting the female giraffe, some of which are international. Yet why are so many people obsessing over something as mundane as an animal in captivity? Well, April has been pregnant with her fourth calf for months and is past her due date, which was scheduled for mid-February. Ever since, people have been anticipating her delivery.

However, the zoo that April is currently situated in, Animal Adventure Park, is on their off-season and is not open to the public. Therefore, to appease the public, the park set up a camera capturing April live and has given the footage to news channels. The viewers are not only people who have personally visited the parks, but also people from across the globe who have become enraptured by this event.

Male giraffes live solely to breed, fight for dominance, and eat. Therefore, the father of the unborn calf, Oliver, must be separated from April since he may end up harming her or stealing the food meant for her and the baby. Oliver is only permitted to be in the same proximity as April for a short period of time every day. In addition, his actions when around her have to be kept under close supervision.

As stated before, April was expected to give birth in mid-February, yet a few months have passed and there is little to no progress. This has led many people online to speculate that there is another reason why the female giraffe has yet to produce offspring: April is actually not pregnant. Here are some arguments to prove this theory. The name itself is slightly misleading. The month of April is infamous for April Fool’s Day, a day to celebrate the ridiculing and torment of people. Therefore, it is possible that the zoo had planned to fake April’s pregnancy in order to garner the interest of the public. However, the practical joke may have gone too far, now that there is an unimaginable number of viewers waiting in anticipation of her delivery. Therefore the park felt pressured into following through with the joke.

Although many animal care specialists have debunked the theory, stating that the symptoms April expresses are identical to that of a female giraffe in her pregnancy; this illustrates how this topic has piqued the interest of many people. April continues to be monitored during the final moments of her pregnancy and the public cannot get enough.
