Mr. Delfin’s Photography Class: Photographing a Friend

For my picture, I wanted my subject to act professionally instead of doing cute poses or just sitting there. I chose to do a camera pose because since it is photography, I think that this pose really represents that they are ready to take a professional photo of anything around them. The background is a neon type look because doing a solid background to me is basic, and I wanted to incorporate something unique.

Our assignment was to go to the studio to take a portrait picture of our partner and then edit the photo to our liking. I photographed my partner Charles Gaunt in front of the dark backdrop because I wanted him to be the main focus of this picture. For his pose I wanted him to do whatever made him feel comfortable and for him to use whichever facial expression he wanted. I used flat lighting by pointing the lights directly onto the front of his face to make it stand out more. I also decided to use aperture priority to have the focus be only on Charles and to not have any other distractions going on in the background. Although we were given a lot of freedom with this assignment, I think that was the most challenging part because we had to use our creativity to come up with the portrait we wanted.

On the morning of the studio portrait assignment, I decided that I wanted to have a prop in my photo that would make it unique. While searching for something, I found this really cool hat that I thought would look great in my photo. In the studio, I had my partner place her hands on each side of the hat to create symmetry. In addition, I wanted her face to not be in full view, so I placed the light fixture higher to create a shadow. Upon editing the photo, I found that desaturating it gave it more character. I also found that the highlights of her hair looked really good in the colored version of the photo but got lost in the black and white, so I tried to brighten them to the best of my ability.

I had Jazz be the subject for the newspaper theme, where his whole body, as well as the background was a newspaper. I saw him walk by the wall with the background, and I thought it looked good, so I had him go back and try it out. I really liked the look of it, and it was something different than my other pictures, as adding any background was newly shown to me by Mr. Delfin. I got the idea from what the subject “Jazz” was wearing, and wanted to see whether the newspaper would have him blend in with the background; it did very well. Before I decided to keep the photo, we tried a few different poses, but I didn’t like how it was coming out, so I felt like it wouldn’t work out. After a few more go’s, we tried this last pose with Jazz crossing his arms, looking straight into the camera, and it came out perfect. I had nothing to do with the lighting; it was set up already, and I just stuck with it because it really blended the subject and background well together.

Love this photo of Jazz blending with the newspaper. How distinctive. Very eye-catching! So original! Congratulations Fabian!
