Festivals Around the World

Each year, we have dozens of celebrations for events both big and small. Whether it be a crystal ball drop to celebrate the new year or a day full of green for St. Patrick, we always find a reason to celebrate. Around the world, many of these reasons turn into ecstatic festivals with wildly strange twists.

Spring is often seen as the season of rebirth, rejuvenation, and… scrambled eggs? Every March in Zenica, Bosnia, residents hold Cimburijada, also known as the Festival of Scrambled Eggs, to welcome spring. Eggs, which symbolize life, are cooked and scrambled in massive pots and pans to give to neighbors, friends, family, and tourists alike. It doesn’t end with eggs, though. For the rest of the day, there is a city-wide barbecue that is sure to fill the stomachs of thousands of attendees. Some dauntless residents also jump and swim across the River Bosnia to mark the start of the swimming season as well.

Another popular festival held in the spring is a celebration of cheese. An incredibly popular tradition, the Cooper’s Hill cheese roll in Gloucestershire, England, garners spectators from far and wide to witness contestants run down a hill for a wheel of cheese. On paper, this sounds easy. However, the hill is very steep and is an astounding 200 yards, longer than two football fields. Combined with the full throttle sprint of dozens of competitors, chasing and securing the cheese is a difficult feat. The winner gets to keep the eight pound wheel of cheese as well as a self-esteem boost.

The Boryeung mud festival near Boryeung, South Korea draws in about a million people each year. The celebration of mud and more mud was actually first used as a promotion in 1998 by Boryeung Mud, a company that made products out of mud, to sell its mineral-rich mud. As time went on, more and more people also realized that the beach at Boryeung was quite the getaway under the blazing summer sun. In recent years, millions of people from all over the world head to Boryeung every summer to take part in the newer festivities, all centered around mud. The Mr. Mud contest, mud races, mud wrestling, mud boot camp, mud facials, mud ceramics, and mud body paintings are just some of the many popular attractions. Furthermore, many pop and hip-hop artists gather at Boryeung in a massive venue to add to the wet<goopy> and dirty madness. However, the festival hasn’t forgotten its roots. The many stores in Boryeung carry a variety of mud products, such as mud sunblock, mud shampoo, and even mud soap. The Boryeung mud festival is a perfect storm of mud, music, and much more.

Unique celebrations and festivals are found across the globe. No matter what occasion, people always find a reason to celebrate.
