The Power of Generation Z

Catherine Chan, Staff Writer

There is no doubt that Generation Z is the most powerful generation the world has ever seen.

Gen Z classifies those 2 billion individuals born within the years of 1996 to 2015. Today, our ages range from 5 to 25 years old. Growing up differently than the rest, as members of Gen Z, we do not hesitate to fight for what we believe in. Today, not only are we the largest generation, but we are the most racially and ethnically diverse generation in history. Despite interference  from the current pandemic and quarantine orders, we are also on track to be the most educated generation.

We have a greater aspiration for success and equality than the previous generations from the successful, young social media influencers such as Zendaya, Billie Eilish, Emma Chamberlain, and Kylie Jenner, to activists such as Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai who won the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 16. Specifically with influencers like Emma Chamberlain, we prove that our generation appreciates authenticity. As a result, statistics have shown that we are more discerning than millennials, whose individuals are born within the years of 1981 to 1996. Growing up in the digital age, we have taken full advantage of our digital platforms to advocate for change.

One of the biggest platforms we use is TikTok. TikTok is a social media platform where users have the ability to create and upload videos. We have attracted the attention of President Trump after derailing one of his presidential rallies. Many claimed they purchased tickets, only to boycott the rally, and kpop fans have similarly flooded the Dallas Police Department’s reporting app with videos during the uprising in June 2020.

Gen Z has undoubtedly created undeniable change. We are shaping the world we live in and changing old norms. With only a sliver of us being able to vote, we engage in and keep up with politics on a day to day basis. What sets this generation apart from others is the fact that fear does not stop us. We create action to spread awareness and bring change. Knowledge is more accessible than ever before, with it only being a click away.

Not only has Gen Z been the most influential in changing social norms, but Gen Z is statistically proven to be more entrepreneurial, with 71% of Gen Z members wanting to start their own business and work for themselves. In that same light, Gen Z is the generation that is the most optimistic of their own futures.

The bottom line is, Gen Z is one of a kind. We have only shown a small part of how much we can change our world with the older members just becoming young adults. As the most powerful, diverse, digitally adept, entrepreneurial, and united, Gen Z will shape the future and has the potential to make history.
