What is Buzzfeed Unsolved?
October 30, 2019
Most of the teens have heard about Buzzfeed Unsolved, a YouTube channel that discusses a variety of unsolved crimes. It’s even produced by our own AHS alumnus, Ryan Bergara. Here is a guide to everything about Buzzfeed Unsolved, and why you should watch it.
The beloved YouTube channel first aired on Feb. 4, 2016. The show is hosted by Ryan Bergara and Shane Madej. Madej replaced the original co-host, Brent Bennett, in late 2016. Bergara strongly believes in ghosts and supernatural beings, while Madej is skeptical about everything. These distinct differences also contribute to the show’s popularity, since many individuals take with either side of belief, labeling them as “Shaniacs” and “Boogaras”. The iconic duo discusses unsolved crimes, supernatural events, and other gruesome occurrences throughout history. Although most of the topics are dark and deadly, the duo chips in with comedic comments here and there. Junior Jocelyn Chin says that their presence and funny comedy “helps [her] as they go through the stories.” However, senior Genevieve Ngo states that she still gets “scared from watching the videos.” This perfect mix of comedy and horror result in a captivating show that will no only get your blood pumping, but also leaving you dying with laughter.
The show is mainly filmed in Los Angeles, but some episodes have been filmed in other states and countries. The main style of each episode is filmed with two hosts sitting at a desk. Bergara presents the facts of the case with visuals and captions. Since all the cases are unsolved, Bergara also presents various conspiracy theories. In some episodes, the duo and their crew members travel to investigate the location. This mainly occurs for locations where supernatural events have supposedly occurred.
Buzzfeed Unsolved has become a rating hit for Buzzfeed. It has become one of Buzzfeed’s most-watched shows. There are five seasons of True Crime and six seasons of Supernatural. An 11th season premiered in September and more seasons are yet to come. The show used to air directly on the main Buzzfeed channel for two years, but a new channel called Buzzfeed Unsolved Network was created in September 2018. Now, Buzzfeed Unsolved also has merchandise such as sweatshirts, mugs, phone cases, T-shirts, and tank tops. I would recommend this show to people who are interested in conspiracy theories, mysteries, and crime. Check out the “Keepin’ it Arcadia” podcast interview with AHS’ own Ryan Bergara here!
