Lover: The Meaning Behind Taylor Swift’s Journal Entries
October 4, 2019
On Aug. 22nd, Taylor Swift came out with a music video for her new song, “Lover”. The song was well-received and the response to the music video was even better. Freshman Emilie Conner stated that “the song was great” and that she “loved it.”As you may know, Taylor Swift has come out with outstanding music in the past and some of her old songs are still on Spotify playlists.
Songs like “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and “You Belong With Me” are considered classics by some people, and they prefer to listen to songs sung by “the old Taylor” rather than “the new one”. Taylor released an album back in 2017 called “Reputation”. The first song released from the album was called ¨Look What You Made Me Do¨. The song was very edgy, somewhat creepy and darker than what Taylor had produced in the past at the time. The song had a controversial response. Some fans loved it and were all over it, while others didn’t enjoy it as much.
Her “Lover” music video acts as a recap of her life as a musician. There are parts of the music video dedicated to each of her albums, which represents her growth as a musician/artist. She also includes some immensely personal journal/diary entries that reveal information about her that we never knew.
There are many diary entries, but the one that stood out the most to me was one written in January 2017. It states: ¨I get all scared about the future because so much has changed in the last year of my life. I mean, this time last year I was living in LA, getting ready for Grammys and now I’m essentially based in London, hiding out trying to protect us from the nasty world that just wants to ruin things. We have been together and no one has found out for 3 months now. I want it to stay that way because I don’t want anything about this to change or become too complicated or intruded upon. But it’s senseless to worry about someday not being happy when I am happy now. OK. Breathe.” Taylor states that she is “essentially based in London” and that she is “hiding out” just so that she can keep her relationship with Joe Alwyn a secret. That is very impressive considering the fact that she is highly popular and that they were dating for 3 months before she revealed this.
The oldest diary entry written dates all the way back to November 5, 2004. The entry is written about 2 years before she released her first single, “Tim McGraw” and became popular. The entry itself is bittersweet as it consists of information regarding her contemplating her decision of whether or not she should sign with Scott Brochetta and his soon to launch label, Big Machine Records. “So Capitol Records doesn’t think I’m ready right now, and I could get a deal right now with them, but not the deal I would want. So, on the other hand, there’s Scott Borchetta, who we met with at Universal. And you know, I really loved all the stuff he said in the meeting, and he stayed for the whole Bluebird show. And he’s SO passionate about this project. So I think that’s the way we’re gonna go, I want to surround myself with passionate people.”
Last but not least, the next entry was written in 2013. She talks about fame and the experience of being “hunted”. “It’s peculiar to me that after all these years I still get so anxious when I see a group of people staring, amassed outside my house, pointing camera phones up… They could never imagine how much that feels like being hunted. And no matter how big my house is or how many albums I sell, I’m still going to be the rabbit. Because the hunters will always outnumber me.” As you can probably tell, she sounds very scared and afraid. She sounds like she feels scared to be in the eye of the public and to deal with the fame, pressure, “hunting” and stalking.
Taylor Swift just exposed herself, but in the best way possible. We got a look inside her head and her thoughts. This gives us a general view of what celebrity minds look like. We get a general idea of how celebrities think, how they feel about fame, how stressed out they are and more. Even though all celebrities don’t think the same, this helps us understand them a little better than before and gives us a chance to step in their shoes and feel what they are going through.
