How to Style a Long Skirt

Caitlin Wang, Staff Writer

Recently, many different clothing brands have released summer lines that included long skirts. This was a bit of a shock to some people considering long skirts had not been a trend during our generation. These skirts are definitely cute, but not commonly worn. Yet, they had made quite a comeback with more and more new styles and versions of them on the market. Long skirts can be difficult to style, so here is a guide on how to style this type of skirt effectively.

  1. A basic white top: Especially during the summer, white tops look amazing during the daytime. A basic white tee shirt or any plain white shirt would look crisp with any sort of long skirt. This is the look to go for if you have no idea what to wear. White shirts are very “bland” so they typically go well with a long skirt that has a pattern of some sort. The overall white shirt-long skirt look is very casual and effortless, so you can never really go completely wrong with it.
  2. The floral maxi skirt: Especially this year, floral print has become very trendy. According to The Trend Spotter, “A floral maxi skirt is a timeless garment that always looks chic.” Each floral skirt may be cute in itself, yet they can be difficult to style at times. Comfortable tank tops typically pair very well with long floral skirts to contrast the pattern. Even a loose cardigan could go well with these skirts, along with simple gold jewelry and flat sandals. All these outfit combinations are perfect for convenience and special occasions, as senior Kelly Kwok states, “I like long skirts because I don’t have to shave when I wear them. Also, I like that they look fancy in comparison to pants.”
  3. A set: Some long skirts have patterns that are easily matched; the same goes for long skirts that are plain and of one color. If you happen to have a shirt that looks similar to a long skirt you have, don’t be afraid to pair the two together. Whether it is a light blue blouse tucked into a light blue skirt, don’t be afraid of trying something new. Although mixing patterns is a trend these days, matching clothing pieces is also “timeless.”
  4. A belt: The majority of long skirts do not have belt loops embedded into their fabric. However, this does not have to prevent you from wearing a belt with a long skirt. With a well-fitted and plain-looking top, a belt could do the trick in making your long skirt look less casual. Belts are extra accessories that can help you dress up a more business-like maxi skirt. Along with the belt, a pair of booties or a leather jacket would be an amazing finishing touch for a more nighttime look.

There are countless ways to style a maxi skirt, so try whatever you like best so the outfit fits in with your personal style. Speaking of personal style, these outfit ideas don’t only have to apply to long skirts considering they are not everyone’s most preferred piece of clothing. You might be like Junior Yenah Lee, who expresses, “I once wore a skirt but did not like it because I found it uncomfortable.” On the other hand, searching through the clothes you already have can be extremely enjoyable. Work with the number of tops that you have and try to get as much inspiration as you can!
