TikTok

Why do good girls like bad guys? Not only is this a question that many have pondered, but it also has become a part of a massive meme thanks to the upcoming social media platform, TikTok.

TikTok has become one of the most popular social media platforms today, and is used by all different types of people, ranging from lip-syncers to comedians. Users of the app can upload brief 15-second clips set to music or an audio track, oftentimes with the creator lip-syncing to the song or acting with the audio clip. The clip can then be enhanced with augmented-reality filters, and can also be slowed down or sped up. People can also “duet” with someone’s TikTok clip, creating a new split-screen video which can continuously be added on to with a chain of duets. Does this app sound familiar? You might have known it as Musical.ly before 2017 when Chinese internet company ByteDance bought out the app for $1 billion. Both Musical.ly and TikTok encourage users to unleash their creative sides and post content of any genre.

Some Apaches unleashed their creative sides through a TikTok video set to the introduction of Zeze by Travis Scott and Offset, filmed in a bathroom on campus. On Halloween, seniors Matthew Chen and Kevin Song “decided to make a funny TikTok with all of [their] friends” and to their “surprise, it went viral.” The premise of the video includes Matthew washing his hands, then turning the phone toward the mirror to reveal a group of boys in banana costumes dancing along to the song. It is posted on Matthew’s TikTok account (@matthewdavidchen) and has acquired 311.6k likes and 3,277 comments.

Other Apaches have mixed emotions on TikTok. Sophomore Megan Ngo has tried, but “failed to understand how the app works.” With so many different types of content on the app, it may be difficult to find content that interests you. On the other hand, Sophomore Kevin Tanzil claimed that “TikTok was the peak of 2018.” Many memes have sprouted or become popularized on the app, which is why it is sometimes compared to Vine, a retired social media platform known for the memes created on it.

TikTok is a unique social media platform with a diverse range of content. Some find it entertaining and funny, while others find it pointless and cringey. Like all social media sites, some content will be great, while others will be disappointing. The app has definitely allowed people to show a goofier, more creative side of themselves on social media and created careers for some users. If any of this sparks your interest, it doesn’t hurt to give the app a try and join over 500 million global monthly active users on TikTok.
