On Tuesday, Nov. 27, at around 11:30 a.m., a stabbing occurred on the Metro Gold Line resulting in the death of an elderly man. The suspect, 51-year-old Peter Muñoz, was charged on Friday, Nov. 30, with murder and carrying an intended murder weapon.

The killing, in which authorities had initially reported a female victim, had actually taken the life of Xuezhong Bao, a 62-year-old elderly man. The train was making its rounds from Azusa to Duarte and was stopped at Duarte station, where authorities came on board to assess the situation. According to Ramon Montenegro of the Sheriff’s Transit Services Bureau, the victim had sustained unspecified injuries, which were later confirmed to be a stab wound to the upper torso. Los Angeles County firefighters pronounced Xuezhong dead at the scene, with his name initially withheld as homicide detectives contacted his relatives.

As the investigation continued, passengers on the car were questioned for their accounts of the crime, and authorities reviewed security camera footage from the area to ascertain the suspect. Authorities took Muñoz in when he exited the train at Irwindale station before it arrived at Duarte. Sheriff Lieutenant Charles Caldero made a statement on Tuesday to the press, claiming that the Sheriff’s Department didn’t “know if there was an altercation between the two, [or] if it was a robbery attack.”

All other trains coming into Duarte station were forced to stop at other stations for the rest of the day. To alleviate other passengers’ stress, the Metro extended their services to shuttle all inconvenienced customers to their destinations by bus.

On Nov. 30, in addition to the stabbing related charges, Muñoz was convicted of eight other cases from between 1985 to 2016. He had an extensive history, with court documents ranging from drug charges, criminal threats, to an assault of a peace officer without a weapon. Muñoz’s bail was set at $3 million; if convicted he may face a possible maximum sentence of 86 years to life in state prison.

As of now, a motive for the stabbing has not been announced.
