The Debate On Diversity In The Workplace

Justin Chen, Staff Writer

In late September, Fox reporter Tucker Carlson ranted and criticized diversity in the workplace. He first questioned the audience, “How precisely is diversity our strength? Can you think of other institutions, such as marriage or military units, in which the less people have in common, the more cohesive they are?” He also asserted many get along worse “with their co-workers if [they] can’t understand each other, or share no common values.”

As expected, Carlson immediately received tons of backlash and was even accused of being racist on Twitter and other social media sites. For instance, Twitter user Linda Hartmann tweeted against Carlson, “I had a neighbor from Mexico who spoke very little English.  I helped her with language and we got along fine. I also have a Vietnamese friend who I get along with and helped her with her U.S. citizenship test. What else you got? Loser.” Another tweeter also demonstrated diversity is an essential part for the human species itself. He stated that “the fundamental basis of humanity is evolution, which requires diversity on levels. Almost every species on the planet has used diversity for adaptation in order to surmount environmental difficulties and survive predators. Tucker Carlson clearly does not understand life.”

CNN Reporter Bekari Sellers also commented on Carlson’s recent behavior. To him, he sees what Carlson did as “vain white nationalism,” as he believes the Fox reporter said the most “asinine and ignorant thing that someone gets paid to actually say.” However, Carlson still defended his beliefs by tweeting, “What’s at stake isn’t a cable news segment. It’s the existence of rational conversation in America. If they can prevent you from asking honest questions, there’s nothing they can’t do.”

What’s interesting is Fox News’ parent company, 21st Century Fox negated Carlson’s anti-diversity beliefs. The enterprise even has a rule stating, “The Company appreciates the importance of valuing and serving a diverse marketplace. Different backgrounds and characteristics, such as race, ethnicity, gender, disability, culture and sexual orientation, bring innovative viewpoints and merit to the creation of our content and products.”

Even though the backlash and ridicule for Carlson have died down, this whole incident goes to show you diversity is what makes the U.S so special and unique.
