The U.S. Open Final, which is a national tennis tournament consisting of five championships: the men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles, took place from Aug. 21 to Sept. 9. During these two weeks, competitors from all over the world battled against other tennis players with the hopes of bringing the championship title home.

The U.S. Open Men’s singles, which occurred on Sept. 9, happened between Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic. The final match concluded with a victory from Djokovic, who scored 6-7-6 against del Potro’s 3-6-3. With the defeat of del Potro, Djokovic  officially won his third U.S. Open Championship Crown, along with his fourteenth Grand Slam Title.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Open Men’s doubles match took place on Sept. 7 and was wrapped up with a strong win from the U.S.’ very own Mike Bryan and Jack Sock. Bryan and Sock played a competitive match against Lukasz Kubot of Poland and Marcelo Melo of Brazil with the final score of 6-3, 6-1. Their win has allowed them to make history by becoming the first pair to win both the Wimbledon and U.S. Open Final in the same year since Bjorkman and Woodbridge accomplished the same feat in 2003.

On Sept. 8, Naomi Osaka played against Serena Williams and won the 2018 US Open Women’s singles with a score of 6-2, 6-4. Naomi Osaka is a 20-year-old woman who was born in Japan but moved to America at the age of three. She began her professional tennis career in 2013 and won various important events in tennis from then onwards. Serena Williams is 36 years old and began her intensive tennis training at age three. Throughout her career, she accumulated 23 Grand Slam single titles and four Olympic gold medals, some of which were from teaming up with her sister for doubles.

During the game, the chair umpire issued three violations against Williams. In response to the the first warning in which the umpire called Williams out for receiving illegal coaching, she lashed out at the umpire, smashing her racket in frustration and calling him a thief for taking away a point. Williams also claimed that the umpire was sexist and that she would have been treated differently if she were a male player. The fine for Williams’ three violations (illegal coaching, racket abuse, and verbal abuse) was $17,000. Williams’ actions attracted lots of attention, which in turn shifted the focus away from Osaka’s victory.

The women’s doubles took place on Sept. 9. Ashleigh Barty and CoCo Vandeweghe won in their match against Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic in the finals with the scores of 3-6, 7-6, 7-6. Barty, a 22-year-old Australian, teamed up with Vandeweghe, a 26-year-old American for their victorious game. After the match, Barty and Vandeweghe talked about how they motivated each other during the game.

All in all, whether they came out victorious or not, every single competitor in the US Open Final put on an exemplary performance. Good luck to any players who will be returning next year to compete again and to any newcomers who show up!
