What to Watch for this MLB Season
May 31, 2018
The Major League season has already started, but there is so much more to watch for. There are new baseball powerhouses we should get used to and some we should forget about. The game is changing, and there are some new superstars that are coming to stadiums near you.
It is only fair to start with the defending champions, the Houston Astros. They are off to another great season and look like they have finally captured the magic of pitchers Gerrit Cole, and Justin Verlander has started off this season strong, the way he finished last season. The rotation has dominated, and Houston continues to boast one of the MLB’s biggest and best line ups. Verlander, Cole, Dallas Keuchel, Charlie Morton, and Lance McCullers are looking like all-stars. It’s going to be another season of non-stop winning for Houston.
Two other baseball powerhouses that should not be forgotten are the Yankees and Red Sox. There is an argument that their line ups are better than that of the Houston Astros. The Yankees have stars like Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Didi Gregorius and Gary Sanchez making up their line up, while the Red Sox have almost, if not as an impressive line up, as their rivals. They can show off Andrew Benintendi, J.D. Martinez and Mookie Betts at the top of their line up. Both teams are currently the best in baseball and have two of the games’ top aces in Luis Severino (Yankees) and Chris Sale (Red Sox). The two teams who continue to battle in their division are the two best teams in the MLB and have already had a bench clearing, which means the days of the heated rivalry could be back and in full swing. Prospects are always a huge part of the game, and the ones this year look stronger than most seasons. Ronald Acuna, Yoan Moncada, Gleyber Torres, Rafael Devers and Juan Soto have already been called up and look like they are already blossoming into stars. Acuna, Moncada, Torres, and Devers have already made huge strides and immediate impacts.
Acuna is batting second for a first place Braves team and is showing what all the hype is about. Moncada is one of the only highlights on a struggling White Sox team as he has hit six home runs and has a steady batting average of .262. Torres and Devers have been even better as Torres is another star within the New York line up that has raked this month. In 27 games, he has 8 homers and is batting .330. Devers’ average has gone down just a bit, but his power numbers are still there as he has hit nine home runs this season. Juan Soto was just called up and in his first big league hit, swung a three-run home run. He’s also 19-years-old and is the youngest player to be called up since Bryce Harper.
This season has been full of surprises from Goldschmidt’s awful year to the Yankees and Red Sox’s crazy battle for first. Baseball is changing, and in one year, it has gone from the year of the hitter to the year of the pitcher. Batters have struck out more than the number of times they have hit home runs. There are a lot of good teams and some teams that we didn’t expect to be at the bottom like the Dodgers. Shohei Ohtani is also living up to expectations as he has four wins and six home runs already. Baseball has been fun to watch and with a lot of super teams, baseball fans will have their eyes glued to the television all the way until the last pitch of the fall classic.
