Sophomore Chris Wilson has been playing baseball ever since he cab remember. Named San Gabriel Valley Male Athlete of the Week by Pasadena Star News, the star pitcher started out playing teeball but quickly fell in love with baseball.
A new transfer to AHS, Chris didn’t let a different setting and unknown faces affect his game, “So this year has been different for me because I had to get to know all the guys. But they welcomed me with open arms and have all played a big part in the success my team and I have had so far this season.” Emphasizing on teamwork he said, “Teamwork is very important especially in baseball because you need all nine guys to work together and do their job to win games.” Along the same lines, Chris credits his constant success and recent recognition to his supportive teammates and coaches, adding that they and his friends and family serve as the biggest motivation for him and “inspire [him] to be the best person and player [he] can be”. One of the factors of being the best includes his next goal of the season, winning CIF. To achieve this, he and his team plan on “working hard everyday and [pushing] each other to get better”.
One step closer to their CIF trophy, the Apache boys have proved their dedication and skill after their recent win against San Dimas High School on Apr. 28 in the Babe Herman Tournament. San Dimas had also been undefeated 20-0 prior to the game but AHS ended its streak by winning 4-3 after persevering through an extra inning and claiming its well-deserved title. At the moment, our Apaches are 21-0 overall and 10-0 in the league—holding the school record for the most consecutive wins. This definitely proves why Arcadia is ranked number number one in CIF’s Southern Section Division 3 and the Pacific League. What’s more, The LA Times has deemed Varsity Baseball the number one team in the Los Angeles and Orange County area, being the 24th best team in the nation according to Baseball America, a sports magazine that covers all levels of baseball from high school to the professional level. As for Chris himself, he’s currently 7-0 this season, an extremely impressive record for such a young yet dedicated sophomore. To add to this feat, Chris’s earned run average, ERA abridged, is 0.27 at the moment. This means that his average of giving up runs to the opponents is less than 30%, a phenomenal statistic, not to mention the fact that Chris has only allowed 1 run in all the 26 innings he’s pitched in so far. From his current statistics for the season, he’s struck out 29 hitters and has only allowed 3 walks.
Chris is undoubtedly a star player in Arcadia Varsity Baseball, and his rise to fame will not go away soon. At this rate, Chris’ skill and the team’s spirit will all lead them down the victorious path to become CIF champions. Keep it up Apaches!
