Dim Sum

Jocelyn Chin, Staff Writer

Arcadia is a city full of Chinese culture. And wherever Chinese culture goes, Dim Sun follows. Dim sum is a style of Chinese cuisine typically served at brunch. It consists of small portions of food served in small steamer baskets or plates. These are some of the foods served in dim sum and some places to get them!

Dim Sum Dishes

Char Siu Bao

These are pork barbecue buns! It’s my personal favorite. The bun is steamed and contains a pork filling. The filling is red and may look unappetizing, but is delicious. They’re served in threes and also featured in street stands in China.

Nai Wong Bao (Steamed Custard Buns)

Nai wong bao is extremely popular on the dim sum cart and for children. Similar to the char siu bao, nai wong bao contains a yellow custard filling. It is sweet and the bun doesn’t have any flavor. This balance of sweet and hot is very appetizing and filling to the stomach.

Chicken Feet

Chicken feet are very popular to eat among adults. They seem strange, but people think they are the best parts of the chicken. Many snacks and side dishes are made using chicken feet. The dim sum dish is basically chicken feet being pickled and fried. Chicken feet are probably not the most healthy dim sum option, but they are wholesome.

Dim Sum Restaurants

Din Tai Fung

This is perhaps one of the most popular dim sum places in Arcadia. My family has tried to eat there many times, but each time we go there, there’s a two-hour wait! It is rated with one Michelin star which means that the cuisine there is very high standard.

China Red

China Red is also a very crowded dim sum place. Many of the elderly like to go there including my grandma. It serves traditional dim sum dishes, but not on the dim sum carts. It serves traditional chinese food at night and is located next to the KFC on Baldwin Avenue. China Red features some interesting decor and has a private room for parties including a wine rack.

Overall, dim sum is a very important part of Chinese culture! It tastes very good and provides insight to the culture. To anyone who hasn’t had it yet, I definitely recommend them to try it out!
