Are the 80s Back?

“What goes around comes” is a term that applies all too accurately to fashion. In recent years, society has seen the return of high waisted pants and shorts, mustard yellow, clear aviator glasses, and Gwenth Paltrow’s satin silk slip dress in 2000 as the chosen prom dress. Not to mention, the early childhood craze of neon colors that resulted in an increase in business at the chain store Justice. What does this all point to? It is a constant return to the past and efforts to revive old styles and trends.

However, analysts have talked about the end of trends because of social media and the different subgroups and niches they form. Yet, every season, there are a few major trends that demand attention from the public. Consumers do not have to buy into them, but many consider why they exist and whether those trends are worth it.

This time, it’s the 1980’s, a decade that has been making a comeback around the aesthetic edges in the past few years. Previously, its reemergence was tempered with other assorted decades and influences, but the 80’s have now reached a critical mass. Shoulders were the body choice emphasized by stylists, often inflated to impressive proportions. Names such as Tom Ford, Versace, Balmain, and Gucci turned back time, all to the soundtrack of “Tainted Love” and “Take on Me.” Prada and Versace included neon into their show, while Tom Ford styled stirrup pants to match.

Despite it all, such a move is hardly surprising. Recent political events, national news, and the #MeToo movement have inspired designers to return to the 80’s era. The rise of athleisure and yoga pants has as its predecessor the aerobic years, with their love of bright-colored leotards, stretch pants, and bodysuits. Perhaps, designers are offering the Generation Z and Millennials the decade they missed out on.
