On Mar. 4, the 90th Academy Awards, which are commonly known as the Oscars, took place at Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California. A few months prior, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated many well-known movies, actors, and actresses for their cinematic achievements from the last year. During the award show, the Academy awarded 24 golden trophies called the Academy Award of Merit, or Oscars, in total. The Academy’s voting board was the key group who decided the final winners, resulting in many unexpected wins.

To begin, the Academy nominated many notable figures for Best Actor and Best Actress. The Best Actor nominees were Timothée Chalamet for his role in the coming-of-age romantic drama movie Call Me By Your Name, Daniel Day-Lewis for his role in the historical drama movie Phantom Thread, Daniel Kaluuya for his role in the horror film Get Out, Gary Oldman for his role in the World War II film Darkest Hour, and Denzel Washington for his role in the legal drama movie Roman J. Israel, Esq. Gary Oldman ultimately took home the Oscar for his portrayal as British minister Winston Churchill.

The nominees for Best Actress also included many talented women, including Sally Hawkins for her role in the romantic fantasy drama film The Shape of Water, Frances McDormand for her role in the drama film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Margot Robbie for her role in the biographical film about Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding called I, Tonya, Saoirse Ronan for her role in the comedy and drama film Lady Bird, and Meryl Streep for her role in the political thriller movie The Post. The winner of this category was Frances McDormand, who stars as a mother who rents billboards in hopes of solving her daughter’s murder.

The nominations for Best Picture were Call Me By Your Name, Darkest Hour, Dunkirk, Get Out, Lady Bird, Phantom Thread, The Post, The Shape of Water, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, and Missouri. The movie that won in this category was The Shape of Water.

Another major category, Animated Feature Film, had many popular animated film nominations. They included The Boss Baby, The Breadwinner, Coco, Ferdinand, and Loving Vincent. Coco, a Disney movie based on the Mexican holiday called The Day of the Dead, won an Oscar in this category.

Best Writing for an original screenplay had nominations that included The Big Sick, Get Out, Lady Bird, The Shape of Water, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Get Out’s writer Jordan Peele accepted the Oscar for this category during the award show, becoming the first African American to accept this award.

Many of the award winners for this year’s Oscars categories were unexpected. Nevertheless, the Academy Awards rightfully honored those involved behind the making of many remarkable films from 2017, as well as the actors and actresses who appeared on screen.
