What is Personal Style
January 19, 2018
What is personal style? Over the years, I’ve gone through so many style phases – tomboy, edgy cool, on-trend basic, comfortable athletic, and classic chic. I can never pick an exact one to stick to and definitely don’t advise you to. The most important aspect to personal style is that you feel both comfortable and confident in what you wear. And why exactly is this important? The impact of personal style goes far beyond making a good first impression; great style is also about approaching each day with confidence, and the ability to feel legitimately beautiful in what you are wearing. Believe it or not, the right wardrobe can make a difference in that department. Being confident in clothing may pertain to the fit, the color, or the cut and shape of the clothing. You may want to emphasize a certain body part or express your feelings. Either way, personal style can sometimes be elusive and seemingly unattainable.
First, find your style spirit inspiration. The likelihood of finding a single style icon that defines you is very low. Most people are more of a mix, think a little Sienna Miller with a dose of Kate Bosworth, plus a dash of Mary-Kate Olsen. To figure out who your main influencers are, start by doing a Pinterest search of “style icons” and save the images you are drawn to. You’ll start to see a collection of repeat people and outfit combinations who you can look to for possible inspiration.
Next, put a label on that style. Take a second pass at your inspiration photos, look beyond the names, and focus on the outfits. Pick a few words to describe the vibe of the looks. Are they ladylike, modern, edgy, bohemian, or classic? Settle on a handful of words that feel true to you and your style, and write them down for future reference; they will help you clarify and define your look.
You know those special days when you walk out the door feeling like your most stylish self? Snap a quick picture for future reference. These are the outfits that epitomize your true personal style, and should serve as inspiration for spin-off outfits.
