When you think of your favorite animal, chances are it is something cute and well known, like a dog or panda. However, there are millions of other wonderful, less-known, equally cuddly animals to choose from. Here are five underrated animals that you are sure to love.

1. Fennec Fox

The fennec fox is the tiny, often forgotten member of the fox family. Fennec foxes live in sandy burrows in the Sahara Desert and North Africa. Like most desert animals, they have huge ears, big eyes, and soft, tan fur. What sets them apart from their other canine relatives is their size. These adorable creatures grow no larger than the average house cat, making them the smallest fox species in the world!

2. Axolotl

Axolotls, also known as Mexican salamanders, are pink, fish-like amphibians that dwell in lakes. Their appearance remains the same for their entire life, as they only change in size after hatching from their egg. Some of the axolotl’s most prominent features are its wide mouth, feathery gills, and innocent blank expression. Unfortunately, due to invasive species and habitat destruction, axolotls are critically endangered.

3. African Civet

Have you ever wondered what a cross between a cat, raccoon, and hyena would look like? Look no further than the African civet. Although they are not close relatives of any of those animals, civets display a crazy mash-up of their physical traits. Civets also have unique crests of fur on their backs that fluff up when they feel threatened.

4. Flapjack Octopus

The flapjack octopus is exactly what it sounds like: an octopus that looks like a flapjack. It is among the smallest of all octopi, growing up to about eight inches tall. It earns its name from the circular flap of skin connecting all eight of its stubby tentacles. The flapjack octopus’ round, squishy shape and sleepy eyes are sure to win your heart.

5. Quokka

The quokka is a lesser-known Australian marsupial that looks like a friendly, cuddly teddy bear. It naturally looks like it has a smile on its face, and its shining eyes and button nose just add to its adorable factor! As for the quokka’s behavior, don’t be fooled by the huggable appearance. They have been known to bite, scratch, or even screech when they are attacked. As long as you keep your distance, one look at a quokka will automatically brighten up your day!
