16 Personalities, Which One Are You?
October 30, 2017
Steven Chbosky, author of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, remarked, “Everyone is special in their own way.” You’ve probably grown up hearing this phrase, and you’ve constantly been reminded that you have a unique identity, one that is completely different than anyone else’s.
Quite frankly, Chbosky is right. And so are the constant reminders you’ve had your entire life. It’s hard to imagine that in the world you live in, alongside 7.6 billion people, there are no two alike. Everyone is unique through their own niches, differentiating themselves from the rest of the world.
One way our intricately fabricated personalities can be measured is through a personality test based on the Myers-Briggs theory. This theory, developed through the partnership of Katharine Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers, is an adaptation of psychoanalyst Carl Jung’s theory of psychological types. The test returns a result of one of 16 personality types, which are used as reference points to help you have a stronger understanding of your unique personality.
Each personality type is analytically composed of a combination of selected traits, with the latter having respective meanings. The questions on the test vary, touching upon minute aspects to determine the most accurate personality type for the tester. Some of these include “Being organized is more important to you than being adaptable” or “It is often difficult for you to relate to other people’s feelings,” just to name a few. The test taker will then rate their relatability with this statement on a spectrum, ranging from “agree” to “disagree”.
After a thorough completion of the 100 questions, a detailed report with the results is given in the form of a four-letter code, each letter having its individual meaning. For example, the personality type ESTP is also characterized as the “Entrepreneur”, with the letters representing extrovert, sensing, thinking, and perception, respectively. Although one’s personality type doesn’t define them, it’s pretty amazing how accurate the results reflect one’s composition.
