Night Market of the Arts

Jasmine Oang, Staff Writer

Every 2nd Thursday of the month, Downtown Los Angeles (L.A.) hosts a night market, featuring food trucks and talented local street artists. This amazing night even offers the option of getting a tattoo for those interested!

The event which started back in 2004, is now known throughout the great L.A. area and is spreading even further. Beginning with only three galleries, it now includes over 50 and is visited by about 25,000 people every single month. For the fifth year, the event is held at the same location and covers the streets between 4th and 9th and, as well as, Spring and Main Streets, lasting from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Street art from various artists and some of L.A.’s best food trucks cover this location and welcome guests who are just starting out their night, you can find the line of food trucks on the corner of 7th and Spring Street. However, visitors are free to wander to the participating galleries and restaurants which are spread all the way towards the Fashion District and to the Financial District.

The local vendors and restaurants open their doors with specials tending to event visitors, allowing them to dine before or after they tour the walk. Both the restaurants and galleries have different hours compared to the walk itself, but they have extended hours until at least 10:00 p.m. for the event. Events may be open before 6:00 p.m. depending on regular business hours. Some of the featured galleries include the Little Tokyo Art Complex and The Broad. The Broad is often known as the white honeycombed museum on Grand Ave. Inside this architectural wonder, there is the infamous infinity mirrors exhibit that is probably spread all around your Instagram feed. Created by 88-year-old Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama, the infinity mirrors exhibit is only here for a limited time. Usually, admission costs $30, however, if you go on ArtWalk Night it may be free. The Little Tokyo Art Complex is usually open by appointment only, but thanks to ArtWalk, you can visit during the event without the hassle. The gallery features contemporary art pieces and mixed media art.

If you’re not sure where to start, you can even join an ambassador guided tour for $20 to $25. Or if you’re not looking to spend money, here’s the link to the map, which you can print or view on your phone: downtownartwalk.org/map. So, make sure to drop by the next ArtWalk Night on Nov. 14.
