The majority of people you’ll meet have likely heard of the artist Laufey (pronounced lay-vay). The Icelandic-Chinese singer, songwriter, and composer released her latest album “A Matter of Time” on Aug. 22. Containing 14 tracks, the album took off soon after its release.
Her tour was announced on Sept. 5. The concert contains five main acts and an encore, including a surprise song. Built into the set is a segment where Laufey crowns the best-dressed guest of that night. So, all of the guests donned their best outfits in order to show them off for the special occasion.
“A lot of girls were wearing piano tile skirts. I thought that was really cool. A lot of people had felt crowns too, which added to the authenticity because it’s a thing for Laufey,” said freshman Sabrina Yao.
She attended LA’s night two, where a young girl named Paisley was crowned as the best dressed. Paisley wore a replica of Laufey’s own costume, with a removable full tulle skirt with a flapper-style dress underneath.
Another notable winner was Sia from Seattle, who crafted a clock skirt inspired by the album cover. Her skirt and bow both lit up with LED string lights.
Many fans handcrafted their outfits, from felt crowns to gloves. Each night was truly a fashion extravaganza. Adorning their outfits with bows and light elements on their skirts and hairstyles added to the whimsical, magical effect of the show.
American figure skater Alysa Liu also attended Laufey’s San Francisco concert, where she was crowned best dressed. Liu previously performed one of Laufey’s songs, “Promise”, which drew Laufey’s attention. She attended in the dress she skated in, along with her gold championship medal.
“Do you understand what this means for my 8-year-old figure skating heart? I was so bad, but she is so incredible,” Laufey said about Liu during her crowning.
When a guest receives the crown, they speak to Laufey for a brief moment. Usually, Mei Mei the Bunny, Laufey’s mascot, will crown the winner. Each night’s crown is handmade by the brand Oddli.
“Mei Mei will do it, but she doesn’t have thumbs, so be forgiving,” Laufey said to her guests during the award ceremony. Fans speculate Laufey’s twin sister Junia is the one wearing the bunny costume, but it hasn’t been confirmed.
The tradition of crowning a fan each night allows Laufey and her fans to enjoy a special moment together and acknowledge the winner’s creativity. It also encourages attendees to wear their best, most magical outfits. Each fan who has been crowned will surely remember the moment they spent in the spotlight with Laufey.
