Students from the four different musical programs gathered together in the Arcadia Performing Arts Center (PAC) during the evening of Sept 26 for the annual Tri-M Induction Ceremony. Inside, there was a sea of returning members in polo shirts and a plethora of new members in their semi-formal attire. What were they there for? Well, all of them had one thing in common: their love for the gift of music, and being a member of Tri-M Music Honor Society was the perfect way to celebrate it.
Tri-M stands for Modern Musical Masters, which includes Orchestra, Band, Choir, and Percussion students. It is an opportunity for dedicated students in music to help their community through service. This is a program where both academic and musical excellence are required in order to ensure they will serve the community well.
Their motto “perform, lead, and serve,” which sums up the whole purpose of the Tri-M program. Through community service and performances, they unite and serve the community through the gift of music. Some events that the Tri-M has already hosted this school year include the annual Elementary Instrument Fair, where students assist elementary school students with choosing an instrument to learn, and Peer Music Tutoring, where more experienced players work one-on-one to tutor and help their peers improve their skills, free of charge.
Although this program’s main focus is on the community, members also reap many benefits from being involved. Tri-M teaches students many important skills outside of just academics and music. Through the many activities and events they host throughout the year, members get the opportunity to develop leadership skills and qualities, including confidence, creativity, critical thinking, and compassion. There are also physical benefits, including access to the Tri-M chapter of the year scholarship. This scholarship was started in 1985, and over $140,000 has been given to chapters around the country.
At the induction ceremony, members stood up and raised their hands, pledging their dedication to the cause. They walked across the stage with pride and confidence to be sworn in and recognized for their talents. Music drifted through the air as students played a medley of instruments. By the end of the event, applause filled the room, and smiles were seen everywhere.
All new and returning members are very excited for what this year will bring.
New member Saanvi Nandwani said, “I’m looking forward to the volunteering events because I already know it’ll be fun.”
