Arcadia High School’s (AHS) Girls JV Softball team played against Burroughs High School (BHS) on Apr. 28. The game was tense; both teams struggled, but ultimately, BHS came out on top with a score of 5-19.
In the first inning, BHS showed off their skills immediately, scoring three runs in.
“Burroughs is a very good hitting team who had a solid defense,” said Coach David Aspeitia.
In the third inning, third baseman freshman Jase Kinder made a great play, hitting a triple and bringing in two runs. This was followed by another run scored by Kinder.
Kinder said, “I got stuck in a pickle, but was luckily able to go home safe and score another run.”
Unfortunately, this momentum didn’t last, as BHS continued to rack up with hits and runs. Additionally, BHS had demonstrated impressive throwing skills, managing to get AHS players out quickly.
“The most difficult part of the game for me was trying not to give up since we were already down by a lot and I had to make sure that I was not only keeping myself from being down, but also my teammates,” said Kinder when asked what she thought contributed to their loss.
Adding to this, Coach Aspeitia said, “The most difficult part about this game, especially since the opponent had more experience, was staying confident in our own abilities. Mainly, in the later innings of this game, I saw that this was especially true. I think overall, we need to believe in ourselves, both individually, and as a team.”
Over the remaining innings, BHS managed to make six more runs. AHS fell behind with only three runs total and didn’t score again until the seventh inning.
“They came to the field with a plan and stuck to it,” said Kinder about BHS’ win. “It was a tough loss for our team, but in the end it was a learning experience, for not only myself, but my team as a whole.”
In the seventh inning, AHS was able to get another two runs, bringing the score up to 5-14. BHS responded with five additional runs, ending the game at 5-19.
Although the team ended their game with a loss, they were able to gain more experience and got a chance to grow individually and as a team.
“We had a lot of mistakes here and there which led to our team losing in the end, but we still played good softball,” said Kinder.
